County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of three flint blades, grouped due to their geographical proximity and probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic. Two of the pieces are secondary blades which have striking platforms and a pronounced bulb-of-percussion. The longest blade, which may be earlier than the other two, has a smaller bulb-of-percussion, perhaps indicating indirect percussion, and a more heavily recorticated surface. Dimensions of longest blade: 73.8mm long, 24.3mm wide. Weight: 18.1g. Total weight of assemblage: 46.1g.

An assemblage of three secondary blades, probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic (c. 7000 BC - c. 3501 BC). Blade no. 36 (right-hand blade in photograph) and 37 (left-hand blade) are of trapezoidal section, have diffuse bulbs of percussion and are snapped at their distal ends. The third blade, no. 67, is of triangular section and also has a low bulb and diffuse rippling. All three blades have a white or off-white surface, which is the result of deposition in alkaline soil. Dimensions: No. 36: 26.3mm long, 17.3mm wide, 3.9mm thick. 1.88g. No. 37: 16.8mm …

Two flint blades of probable Late Mesolithic to Mid Neolithic date (c. 7000 - 3300 BC). Blade no. 90 (left-hand flint on image) is incomplete, the lack of patination on the break suggesting this damage occurred relatively recently. The remaining portion is sub-rectangular, with several vertical arrises on the dorsal surface and evidence of platform preparation at the proximal end. The striking platform remains, adjacent to which is a diffuse bulb and ripples. The surface is heavily patinated, white with occasional iron staining. Length: 24.8mm; width: 13.3mm; thickness: 6.2mm. An assemblage of five flint blades, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods. Blade numbers 24 (top left on photograph), 29 (top right) and 26 (middle right) are all broken tertiary blades, have trapezoidal to triangular sections and show no evidence of retouch. Blade no. 25 (middle left) has the same cross section but one end has been abruptly retouched to form a point, and could be described as a microlith. The final blade, no. 28 (bottom row), is a secondary blade, trapezoidal in section and soft-hammer-struck. The right-hand mesial edge of this blade exhibits pr…

A group of ten flint blades, forming part of a larger assemblage of lithic material (see other PAS records). Five of the blades are secondary (i.e. retaining some cortex), and the remaining five are tertiary (no cortex). Nos. 3, 14, 16, 22, 23 and 11 have been snapped at their distal ends. The lack of patination on the breaks of nos. 8, 16 and 11 suggests relatively recent damage, whereas that on the others is consistent with the overall patination of the blade, indicating that the damage occurred in antiquity. Most of the flakes have a light blueish recortification, retain parts o…

A possible core rejuvenation flake, probably Mesolithic or Early Neolithic in date. The subtriangular piece has a longitudinal curvature and what appear to be parts of several parallel blade removal scars on the dorsal surface, plus some of the flint's original cortex. Object type: BURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint burin, made from a secondary flake. The piece is subcrescentic, has several ridges on its dorsal surface and diffuse rippling on the ventral. The burin's point has probably been created by blunting of the area adjacent to the bulb. In addition, there is an area of invasive retouch at the distal end. Other serrated and notched edges appear to be the result of natural damage. The flint is lightly patinated and retains a small portion of the cortex. Length: 34.6mm; width: 13.5mm; thickness: 5.3mm. Weight: 2.11g.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade of probable Mesolithic date. The blade has a longitudinal curvature, and sides that are generally straight and parallel; however, a notch has been cut at one point, which suggests that this may be an unfinished microlith. On the ventral surface, adjacent to the notch, there is an area of abrupt retouch, which cuts through the white surface patination. A central ridge creates a triangular section. There is invasive retouch to the other side. The blade has a straight, well patinated break at its distal end. Length: 26.5mm; width: 7.8mm; thickness: 2.6mm. Weight: 0.59g.

An opposed platform flint blade core, dating from the Mesolithic period. Narrow blades have been struck from either end of this subcylindrical core. One of the platforms has been truncated by damage which occurred in antiquity. The edges of both platforms display evidence of preparation. There are several hinge fractures to the perimeter of this heavily patinated piece. Length: 43.8mm; width: 26.7mm; thickness: 21mm. Weight: 27.74g.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked flint implement, probably representing an unfinished Mesolithic microlith. The piece is roughly drop-shaped, with a clear bulb-of-percussion at the proximal end. Above this, the two blunted sides converge to a point. Opposite the bulb-of-percussion is what appears to be the start of a notch. The flint is light to mid grey and is slightly patinated. Length: 28.2mm; width: 20.4mm; thickness: 4.6mm; weight: 2.21g. This flint is part of an assemblage of microliths found at this location. Similar pieces are illustrated by Butler (2005: fig. 34, nos. 12 - 14).

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade or microlith, dating from the Mesolithic period. The heavily patinated blade is of triangular section, flaring towards the distal end. Both the proximal and distal ends have been squared off, probably deliberately, in the former case resulting in the removal of the bulb-of-percussion. The sides have a serrated feel, possibly as a result of wear through use, and the lower part of one side has been blunted. The flint is a heavily patinated light grey. Length: 36.4mm; width: 9.9mm; thickness: 2.4mm; weight: 0.83g.
