Circumstances of Discovery A chance discovery of four silver coins was made in the Derbyshire Dales on 9 March 2013. An excavation around the findspot in October 2013 produced a further 22 coins (including gold, silver and base metal types) as well as a number of base metal and non-metal objects. The Coins The coin assemblage consisted of twenty-six coins. Three are Roman Republican coins, struck in 118, 104 and 46 BC respectively. A fragment from a cast copper alloy 'Winchester Style' strap end of later early medieval date (900 - 1100 AD). Only the very tip of the strap end survives - the beaks on the edges are all heavily eroded . In plan the fragment is semi-circular (D shaped) and in section it is lentoid. The exterior edge is decorated with a series of D shaped arches, from the base of each arch a lentoid rib extends which conjoin at the mid point. A damaged but mostly complete lead alloy spindle whorl dating from the medieval to post-medieval period. The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, with a central, circular perforation extending vertically through the object. The sides of the spindle whorl are slightly convex and have a repeating pattern of vertical grooves and ridges. There are four lozenge-shaped mouldings attached to the corners of the object; there is a pronounced seam around the girth of the object and is representative of the manufacturing technique. A complete cast copper alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th-14th century AD). It is broadly circular in form but comprised of a total of twelve small lobes which gives the outer edge an undulating appearance. These lobes are defined by grooves to either side with one of these grooves forming the pin rest. The pin (formed of a looped slightly tapering strip of copper alloy) sits in a constriction which divides one of the twelve lobes into two halves. A incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval buckle frame. Only the pin rest of the frame survives. The design of the whole buckle would have been D-shaped with an expanded outer lip with separate roller. This expanded outer lip with additional roller, which forms the pin rest, is all that survives. Due to corrosion the roller no longer rotates. The roller is cylindrical with a central groove running around the circumference. For a more complete example please see LIN-DE3D60 (http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/476148). A incomplete copper alloy Post Medieval book clasp fitting dated c.1550-1650. The fitting is roughly rectangular in shape with a flaring 'fish-tail' attachment end and a broad hook at the terminal end. The 'fish-tail' end is comprised of three lobes with a circular rivet through the central lobe. The front is decorated with raised decoration consisting of concentric rings, pellets and lines. there is a further hole for a second rivet along the midpoint of the main body of the fitting. The token has a raised design of an intial or intials, probably intended to be a single letter W (designed as two overlapping letter Vs). There is a single raised pellet both above and below the letter. The reverse is blank. Lead tokens are difficult to date precisely and could be Medieval to Post Medieval in date (1250-1800 AD). Incomplete post Medieval cast copper alloy sword belt fitting. The fitting consists of an irregular-shaped plate decorated with an incised curvilinear floriate design. The plate had two circular rivets at the top and bottom, one of the holes for these rivets survives intact but the other is incomplete as it is the point of a break. The fitting is broken at both the top and bottom. Compare with DENO-11C9C1 a complete example of this type of fitting. Fittings of this type are typically dated c.1550-1650.
