A fragment of post-medieval tin-glazed London Delft earthenware tile, dating to the late 17th century. The background is a white-ish grey/ blue with detail picked out in thin and thick blue lines. Although smooth to touch, the glazing survives in patches only. The decoration takes the form of a central S-shape (outlined by two thin blue lines). Between the central and lower curve are two vertical thin lines with an annulet to either side. Extending horizontally left from the central curve are a pair of parallel thin lines, repeating at the upper curve. Above the S is a larger annulet…

An incomplete late Medieval iron shoe buckle, dating 14th-15th century. The buckle is circular in both profile and section, with the pin attached around the frame of the buckle. Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991, 57) where they are described as shoe buckles and they were excavated from contexts dating late 14th - early 15th century and in Egan (2005, 34) dated 1650-1700, however this is described as residual. Egan (2005:34) writes "shoe buckles are first continued with the two standard late medieval forms (as this above example) with a hiatus in the early 17…

A Palaeolithic (500,000 - 130,000 BC) sub-oval flint handaxe with multi-directional flake removals, towards the outside edges, on both faces. The handaxe is lenticular in cross section, measuring max.52.6mm in width and max.28.2mm in thickness. It narrows to 38.3mm wide at the curved cutting edge and 37.0mm at the (now damaged) butt end. The patina is a deep orangey-brown 'toffee' colour, the damage at the butt end revealing a much paler, yellowy-coloured flint beneath. Iron staining is apparent along the arises. The handaxe measures 95.1mm in length, 52.6mm in max.width, 28.2mm in …

A probably late medieval/ early post-medieval (c.1400-1700) lead alloy sexfoil mount, slightly convex to the reverse with a short hollow central tube extending from a central 3mm diameter piercing. To the front three domed circular lobes, decorated with raised cross-hatching or 'brambling', alternate with circular hollow lobes, missing their original setting. Traces of an off-white residue can be seen inside these latter lobes, possibly a fixant of some kind of perhaps decayed enamel. The tube to the reverse extends 1.8mm and has a lip at its end. It is likely this functioned as an e…

A late Medieval - Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) spoon bowl dating to the 15th-16th century. The remaining spoon consists of a bowl and part of the stem, the break on the stem is rounded. The surviving section of the bowl suggests the original shape was pointed oval or 'fig-shaped' and the bowl was shallow. The stem is narrow with a hexagonal cross-section. There is no iron strengthening rod within the stem. The shape of the bowl has been modified with sections cut out either side of the tip. On the top of the pin head there is a small knob just off centre. The object is broken. Stephen Greep discounts this as a Roman hair pin "as the cross section is all wrong and decoration going down the stem is very rare." Length: 40.96mm, width: 7.99mm…

The design on the shield appears to have been a red squirrel in a tree with red leaves as traces of blue (the tail) and red paint (The body) survive along with traces of gilding across the front surface.
