Medieval silver coin A contemporary copy of a William I (1066-87) penny. Uncertain mint and moneyer. cf. BMC 6, North 846, sword type (1079-82) but with a crude bust and the sword to the right 18.5mm - 18.7mm diam.; 0.5mm thick; 1.26g Martin Allen says of the coin: A contemporary imitation, probably produced in south Wales or the Welsh March (cf. Edward Besly, BNJ 86 (2016), p. 148 and Pl. 24, no. 197). I would read the inscriptions as follows: Obv. +IMII+D[R?]I+II Rev. +DVNI+I[ ]IIID

Reverse legend reads: CIVI/TAS/LON/DON . Mint is London. Reverse shows a solid long cross, three pellets per quarter. The Ns are roman = class 1c. An early medieval silver penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (796 - 821 AD). A Group III type with a cross moline reverse; North no. 365. Three similar examples are recorded on the as EMC: 2012.0263, 2000.0015 and 2012.0239. Two of those are closest parallels with moneyer Wihtræd (PIHTRED). Dr. Martin Allen of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge states: This can be classified with Naismith type E12.5 (North 365), which consists of EMC 2012.0239, a coin in the BM (BMC 91) and this coin. A crude base metal uniface reproduction obased upon a penny of Edward the Elder. In large, rounded capital lettering is written EADVVEARD REX with a central cross patee made up of four wedges. The second 'D' is contracted to make it fit into the legend, The 'A's are unbarred. The reverse is plain with some uneven areas. A silver penny of Edward the Confessor, Expanding Cross (heavy coinage) type of the moneyer Beorhtsige, c.1050-1053 AD. The coin has been modified with the addition of gilding on the reverse and damage at the centre of the obverse flan, probably indicating re-use as a coin brooch or similar object. This coin was found in c.1982 and therefore does not qualify as treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act. As North, 1975: no. 823, Dr. M. Allen (Fitzwilliam Museum, pers. comm.) notes that this coin is from the same reverse dies as SCBI 6 no. 686.
