Medieval silver badge fragment in two pieces, leg length 18 mm, width 7 mm; tail length 11 mm, width 5 mm. It represents the hindquarters of a lion with a flowing tail. The tail has broken off. On the reverse are traces of a pin attachment or stitching loop that would have attached the badge to a garment or a hat. The lion was probably used to signify a heraldic affiliation or perhaps the Royal Coat of Arms. The badge fragments are silver and date from the fourteenth or fifteenth century.

Treasure Report: 2012 T256 Cumbria A medieval brooch fragment, roughly semi-circular shape with a plain reverse and the letters of an inscription engraved on the obverse. The inscription reads IESVS The vertical stroke of the next letter survives on the broken edge. This almost certainly formed the letter "N", so that the inscription would read IESVS NAZARENUS REX IUDIORUM or an abbreviation of the same. This inscription was a popular form of decoration on Medieval brooches and is the Latin for: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews It was invoked as an amuletic charm throughout t…

A late medieval or early post- medieval finger- ring, consisting of a flat hoop cast with the form of two clasped hands (a "fede" or friendship ring). A medieval silver-gilt coin pendant made from a penny from the reign of Edward I (class 4b), minted at Canterbury between 1282-9. The practice of converting coins to items of jewellery such as brooches or pendants was quite widespread and is usually considered to be done close to the period of coin production. This pendant has received the additional decoration of five shallow collets (much abraded), possibly to contain coloured glass. Each of these are placed at the end of the arms of the cross and at its centre. The cross is exploited for its decorative potential and significantly, …

A late medieval or early post-medieval gilded silver pendant, with a suspension loop at the top, a cabled border and a claw setting, which contains a black stone. The black stone resembles jet and is very distressed, but appears to have been carved into the shape of a scallop shell. There may be a central figure of St James but the damage is too extensive to be certain of this. Jet souvenirs were avidly collected by pilgrims to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela from the late Middle Ages. The scallop shell is the symbol of St James, who is venerated there. The pendant date…
