Boon (1958) lays out the criteria for acceptance of a Byzantine coin as a genuine ancient loss. First, clear evidence of provenance is essential. This should be combined with independent confirmation that the site was occupied at or shortly aft…

Early Medieval copper alloy Byzantine follis, probably of Constans II, AD 641-668?, possibly dating to c. AD 641-50. Probably Mint of Constantinople. The obverse shows the emperor facing holding a long cross (or similar) and a cross on globe. The reverse is probably a large M, traces of which might be visible. The coin is probably an overstrike on a very crudely cut flan and is worn. W. Hahn, Moneta Imperii Byzantini Vol III (Vienna 1981), pl. 28, cf. 162ff.

A uniface copper-alloy disc, probably representing an insert from an Early-Medieval pendant. The decorated surface of this disc is a direct copy of the reverse design on a gold histamenon of Byzantine empress Theodora (1055-1056) and is also the same diameter as the original coin. On the left of the design is the standing figure of Theodora and on the right is the Virgin Mary, both facing forwards. The empress wears a crown, saccos and loros, whilst the Virgin is nimbate and clad in pallium and maphorium. Between the two figures, and held by both, is a labarum. The legend reads: +…

A very worn copper-alloy coin of uncertain type, possibly a Byzantine coin of uncertain Emperor, c.5th-10th centuries AD? The coin has a flattened oval shaped flan that has been folded at one end, with one face illegible due to post-depositional damage and wear. This is possibly a core from a plated gold(?) Byzantine coin rather than a copper-alloy coin.
