A very worn copper-alloy coin of uncertain type, possibly a Byzantine coin of uncertain Emperor, c.5th-10th centuries AD? The coin has a flattened oval shaped flan that has been folded at one end, with one face illegible due to post-depositional damage and wear. This is possibly a core from a plated gold(?) Byzantine coin rather than a copper-alloy coin.

An unidentified coin, possibly a two nummus piece of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I (AD 527-65) or the Ostrogothic king of Italy, Theoderic (AD 493-526). There does appear to be a B on the reverse. The B on Byzantine coins stands for two nummi and is used on coins struck at Carthage, AD 533-8 (MIBE 190) and at Thessalonica, AD 527-38 (MIBE 177). In Ostrogothic Italy, Theoderic's 2 nummus coin from Rome, c. 493-518, has an R on the reverse which looks like a B (Metlich 80b). It is difficult to be sure which type this coin is because it is overstruck and possibly also doublestruck, but it is probably MIB 159-60 / DOC 76-83 or MIB 164-5 / DOC 105-16. These two issues date to 613-6 and 629-41. It is just possible that the overstrike is DOC 114 which is for 639-40 because it is possible that the date is XXX. An anonymous follis, class A2, attributed to Basil II or Romanus III, AD 976-1034. Die axis probably 8 o'clock, weight is 8.14g, diameter is 32.46mm and thickness is 2.04mm. The coin has a sub-rectangular perforation that measures 4.02mm x 3.01mm. Both sides of the flan are worn. One side seems to show a haloed bust forward facing. Copper Byzantine pentanummium (5 nummi) (c.AD 498-641) with facing helmeted bust on the obverse and possibly a large E or Monogram type with a cross on the reverse, both obscured by fossil accretion, which looks like pale corrosion product. There is a large variety of pentanummia from the reigns of Justinian I (527-565) to Heraclius (610-641). The coin is most likely to have come from this period (Sam Moorhead pers comm).
