A worn and corroded base silver (billon) or copper-alloy coin, probably and a late 11th to early 13th-century Byzantine trachy, possibly of Emperor Theodore Komnenos Doukas (1225-30) or Manuel Komnenos Doukas (1230-37) struck at the mints at Thessalonike (Greece). It is also possible that the coin may be a contemporary Bulgarian imitation. Ref: Morrison 2003; Dumbarton Oaks online (doaks.org).
The coin was struck on an irregular, dished flan and there is a crack at one corner. It is in poor condition with only parts of the design visible in either obverse or reverse fields and no…

Byzantine copper alloy coin: possibly a tetarteron which were small, thick copper coins of this period. It is likely to date from the 11-13th century. The design of the Virgin Mary(?) on the obverse and standing figure on the reverse was within the remit of this period, although not exacatly the same.

The only semissis of this period to be found in Britain. As it was minted in Sicily, it is quite possible that it arrived as a result of trade via the Straits of Gibraltar or the River Garonne.

A gold solidus of Arichis II, dux of Benevento (Italy), probably Class I coinage of 758-765.
See Grierson and Blackburn 1986 (Medieval European Coinage 1: The Early Middle Ages), 575, plate 50 (no 1096).
The coin bears two cut marks at 1 and 5 o'clock respectively, both of which cut through the coin in a straight line, angled toward a point just right of centre. The cuts do not meet, however, so that the coin remained intact. These cut marks may represent an aborted attempt of 'hacking' the coin for gold - a practice common in the Early Medieval period.
