Cast concavo-convex naturalistically modelled mask of a maned lion with luxuriant tresses and ‘beard’ arranged in a sub-rectangular form to frame jowels, nose and brows projecting in strongly moulded relief. Extensive gilding traces appear on the display side. Two drilled holes of diameter 6mm appear at either end of the mouth, with a further blind pit behind the nose. Reduced shell tempered fabric with frequent inclusions to length 2.5mm; one body sherd (height 37.7mm) with an impressed wavy line  between grooves on its outer wall; and a fiercely abraded ?rim sherd fragment. The wavy line is a common decoration on 2nd-century Romano-British pottery. The form may be Roman but the shelly fabric is in the Iron Age tradition.
