Roman casket fittings. The wooden casket no longer survives, however the copper alloy fittings survive. This comprises of 13 rings, 8 lions head mounts, two handles and a corner strap. The fittings from this casket can be found throughout the Roman period, however this example is most likely a late 1st to 2nd century example due to the context in which it was found. The casket was probably initially used as a container for jewellery, with the lions symbolising protection. The casket was then used for funerary purposes. The casket would have been reused for funerary purposes (Nina Crum…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Three fragments from a cast copper alloy bell of probable Roman date (100 – 300 AD). Although the fragments do not fit together it is likely that they come from the same bell. Originally it is likely that the bell was sub-circular in plan and domed or arched (bell shaped) in profile. The largest of the fragments consists of the upper portion of the bell with an integral cast sub-circular suspension loop positioned at the peak of the dome. This loop is complete, however, the upper edge is thinner than the others; this suggests that it has been worn through use. There is no evidence fo…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable late 13th to 14th century date. Five similar examples are recorded by S. Ashley in his book "Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk" (2002; pp. 209-213) and it is suggested that the device (see below) is generic in nature, referring to England and France rather than to a specific family. The quatrefoil pendant is intact and only slightly corroded. The central square panel has a design in relief which depicts a lion passant guardant facing right. The area around the lion is filled with red enamel. In each of the four outer lobes is…
