Hollow-cast element now squashed inwards upon itself, originally of spherical or bulbous form. One side plain, the other with applied flowerhead decoration. Along one edge, an animal with wings, long tail and four legs, its head broken off. Entire surface gilt. 1.7 cm long. It is impossible to discern the original function and appearance of this object. It might possibly be part of a whistle, akin to the whistle from Horsey, Somerset, for which see Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 125, dated to 15-16th Century. Probably 16th Century. In terms of age and as the object co…

Silver "bosun's" whistle. Slightly tapering sheet tube with two applied transverse double-grooved fillets, one at the widest end and one at the centre; at the narrower end is a hollow cast sphere which has a circular hole (diameter 5mm) cut at the junction with the tube - air blown through the tube would pass over this finger-hole. Around the sphere is an applied flat band decorated with three raised ribs; it runs from the far edge of the finger-hole to the underside of the tube. Flat-sectioned S-shaped handle soldered at two points to the underside of the tube, and also to the inner …

Medieval? lead alloy whistle? fragment, 32mm long and 7mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a grey patina and weighs 1.35grams. The object consists of a circular sectioned tube which has decorative curled 'wire' on each side, 22mm wide. The object is similar to a pilgrims whistle illustrated in 'Pilgrim souvenirs and secular badges' page 207 and also to a boatswains whistle, though I'm not sure if any were made of lead?

Silver decorative whistle, spherical body or buoy made of two parts of silver sheet soldered together with a raised rib. Each hemisphere decorated with raised flower-head pattern and central knop. Thin gun of silver with a flange to hold the whistle by. Damaged. Decoration recalls that on 16th Century dress pins and fittings and this is likely to be of that date. Compare a tin whistle of similar form in the NMM, PT 0457, there called a boatswain's call, and six in the MOL from the Thames foreshore. Silver whistles were used as badges of office and for giving signals at sea. Compare al…

A Medieval – Post Medieval lead alloy incomplete whistle, probably a pilgrims’ whistle (13th - 17th century). This is the mouthpiece; the hollow bulb is missing. The mouthpiece is cylindrical narrowing the end to which the bulb would have attached. The surface is covered with a repeated cast motif of two adjoining ovals with pellets and hatched lines within. There is one complete and one incomplete cast loops projecting from the upper surface. These loops are also decoratively cast with a twisted rope design and a border of pellets. They may have been used for suspension. …

Medieval lead object fragment, possibly the bulb from a boatswains' or pilgrims' whistle. Three-dimensional hollow object, originally domed or sub-spherical and with a suspension loop, is it now broken at the 'base' (opposite the suspension loop) and squashed flat. The surviving surface is decorated with two ring and dots, flanking a longitudinal herringbone line. The other surface is damaged and distorted but what survives appears to have been decorated in the same way (can make out two ring-and dots). There is no wear on the loop. The casting line runs down the sides of the loop and …

Lead object, probably a post medieval whistle, in the shape of a key. Bent into a 'W' shape. Head in the form of a lis with a cylindrical projection from the central lobe - the projection has a small circular perforation, which is presumably a blow-hole. In the centre of the lis on one surface is raised open cylinder, which may also be perforated, although this is not clear - this may have acted as a sound-hole. At the base of the head is a linear projection - it is not clear what this is for, or if it is broken. Double plain collar at the junction of the head and shaft. The shaft is h…

Description: A composite cast silver alloy bead possibly from an item of jewellery or a composite dress ornament / dress fitting. It seems to be formed in two parts and be hollow, the two elements being soldered together at the mid-point with a relatively thick central ridge. Either end is decorated with a raised wire-like design consisting of a flower formed with eight radiating petals. At the centre of the design is a raised boss like knop. A large tare is present on the upper edge of the bead presuma…

Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector Description: Silver hollow cast sphere from a huntsman's whistle. The pea is now missing. Decoration is applied on both sides in the form of a quatrefoil motif with a plain cross running through the centre. Discussion: This fragment was found within very close proximity to the Silver Huntman's whistle found in October 2002 (see 2005 T22; TAR 2995 - 2006), and as such is most likely to be part of the same artefact. Due to its age and precious metal content, this item would qualify as treasure under the Trea…

A cast lead alloy (possibly pewter) fragment from a whistle of post medieval or early modern date (1650 – 1900 although probably 19th century). A fragment of post-medieval silver whistle, consisting of a hollow tube decorated with relief interlaced circles creating lozenge shapes, each with a raised central square. At one end there is an elaborate collar of rope work passed between three coils of metal (probably cannetille). The fragment was originally thought to date from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century, but subsequent parallels with relief ornament and cannetille (e.g. LIN-403242 and SUR-07B392) have indicated a slightly later date, in the 16th or early 17th centuries.

A late Medieval - early Post Medieval pottery incomplete whistle of Low Countries White Ware with green glaze dating 1480-1650. The whistle is the characteristic biconical shape with flaring foot and slightly flaring rim and tubular mouthpiece projecting from the shoulder. The fabric is a fine buff-grey with a mid green glaze covering the majority of the surface. There are a couple of small areas without a glaze, one of which appears to be where the whistle was abutting another vessel when stacked in the kiln. There is some damage to the foot, rim and end of the mouthpiece. …
