Lead
Possible weight. Segment of a thick cast cylindrical ring; suggesting an original external diameter of c.27mm, with a central hole of diameter c.10mm. One edge bears moulded decoration of straight intersecting lines. Though this recalls decorated Post Medieval biconical lead whorls in both its size and decoration, the central hole would be a little wide to sustain this interpretation. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
Diameter: c.27mm, Thickness: 9.96mm, Weight: 7.05gms.

Cast lead disk with a slightly off center circular piercing; probably a weight, possibly a spindle whorl. It has irregular slightly squared edges that appear to have been folded inwards in places and is slightly bent. The piercing is 6.9mm in diameter with small tears to either side possibly made by a chord. The weight is 33.8mm in diameter, 5.1mm thick and 24.98 grams in weight.

Copper alloy cup weight from a nested set. The weight is circular with worn circular impressions around the rim. Cup weights were used to weight gold and silver, in the form of a coin, small objects or as scrap metal or other precious materials. Cup weights sold in nested sets are known from the thirteenth century (Saunders, 2001, p125).

Lead weight, formed from a disk shaped piece of lead with a hole through its centre, which would probably have been slightly conical in form originally. However, it has become folded in half at some point. It is crudely made and could plausibly date from the Roman period onwards, though is probably more likely to be of Medieval to Post-Medieval date.

A complete large, triangular shield-shaped lead weight, with a flat top and rounded edges. Possibly a wool weight. The triangular weight also has rounded corners and has been crudely made. The weight features a large shield. No further detail can be seen. The weight weighs 15oz or 442g. Due to a lack of excavated examples and lack of context the weight can only be dated to the medieval to post-medieval period. The weight is complete. The lead is a dark whitish-grey colour.

Copper alloy trade weight, two concentric lines run around the edge with two more in the centre. There is a stamped H in between, normally this would be crowned but a miss striking may have resulted in this element being omitted. The H suggests that this is a weight of either Henry VII or Henry VIII. Diameter 37mm, thickness 2mm, weight 12.12g

Age uncertain, Roman - Georgian. Lead alloy, crudely cast, fair size 'loom' type weight. Length 48.6mm, Width 41.1mm, Thickness 39.2mm, Diameter 41.1mm, Weight 328g. This has a tapering central hole down through the centre of the weight - narrow at the apex 3mm and wider at the base 10mm but also somewhat off-centre. There is a white and grey surface patina but also several fresh silver/grey patches and dented areas as a result of being struck by agricultural equipment. Ref. A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 1.7mm) on its upper surface. Within is a punch at the centre of a flat field. Around this are numerous fine concentric lines from the manufacturing process. Punched within the rim at around 1 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at around 12 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'C', denoting King Charles, although one cannot distinguish betwee…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (early 18th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 2.8mm) on its upper surface. At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at 11 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'A', denoting Queen Anne (1702-1714). A cast copper-alloy weight or counter of possible Roman date. It is flat, circular in form and has three evenly spaced circular perforations. The object is slightly unevenly cast with one side being thicker than the other and it has a pale green patina. It measures 11.97mm in diameter, 3.83mm in thickness, and weighs 2.26g.
This is probably a small weight or counter. A similar example, with four punched dots on each side, is noted from London (LON-FFBCD1), and two small disc shaped copper-alloy weights are published from Colchester (Crummy, 1983: nos. 2511-2512). This might indicat…

A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan. It is decorated unifacially; the lower face is marked and worn but seemingly only as a result of old damage. The upper face features a design rendered in relief. It may represent a figure advancing right with a staff, or, the other way up, perhaps the Roman numerals 'III' or the letter 'IN', below which a pair of 'C' shapes and a transverse line. At 47.7g it is equivalent to around one-and-a-half troy ounces, or around one-and-two-thirds ounces avoirdupois. Biggs and Withers (2000, 24-26) features two round flat wei…
