A worn and corroded small cast lead weight in the shape of a frustum, or truncated cone. It is broadly trapezoidal in cross-section, with a flat base. Copper alloy weight. Cast circular nesting weight, with incuse legend (not readable) and central figures 1?6; a slightly concave base bears a projecting central pimple. Corroded. The mass indicates this to be a one ounce measure; the notation may refer to its being one sixteenth of an averdepois pound. Probably from a set of scales and weights for kitchen use. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1930. Diameter: 29.4mm, Height: 7.6mm, Weight: 26.13gms.

Lead probable weight. Cast waisted weight, resembling an exaggerated cotton reel form. This may have facilitated tied attachment, or movement along a guide or channel. Comparable weights accompany groups of Roman finds from Newbald Lodge, East Yorkshire, in the Foster Collection of metal detector finds held at the Hull and East Riding Museum. However, their function remains uncertain, and it is equally uncertain whether they form part of the Roman assemblage, or may derive from later activity centred on the 19th-century farm. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 36mm, Height:…

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. 1200-1500. The spindle whorl is biconical in shape with a circular hole in the centre and tapering sides. It was made from a lead-alloy and probably had moulded decoration on the obverse and reverse. However, both faces of the whorl are very worn; it is difficult to assess the decoration. It may have been writing, but it is much more likely that it was a decoration composed of lines, zig-zags and possibly dots. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, 66) points out that: "The function of l…

A complete cast lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Medieval dating (1300 to 1550 AD). The weight is an irregular cone in plan, and triangular in profile / cross section. A length of thick iron wire has been inserted into the top of the weight (the flat surface of the cone), probably as a method of suspension. Iron corrosion products present have obscured the original shape of the probable suspension loop. No decoration is present on the weight. It is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. It measures 22.99mm tall, and has a diameter of 20.90mm at the to…

Copper alloy possible weight. Flat square cast object with slightly bevelled external edges and a hollow centre; possibly one of a set of nesting weights. If this identification is sustained, the size and weight may suggest this object respects the metric system. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1900. A cast lead weight of probable post-Medieval date. The weight is circular in section, the diameter decreasing from the bottom to the rounded top. The flat bottom surface bears a relief moulded design comprising a number of crudely formed letters which form a ring around the central point. These letters appear to read '1WTOW', although the starting point of this legend is unclear. A concentric segmented border extends around the perimeter of the base. On top of the weight are the following numerals: '5591(horizontal line)/(1603 or 1503)/[ ] [ ] (two unidentified numerals/letters)'. …

A handmade lead weight, oval in both section and plan. A hole has been pierced from the top to the bottom to allow for it to be suspended. The suspension is normaly via an iron loop, but no iron staining is visible in this example. The hole is slightly off centre which would make the weight less precise. As most steelyard weigts of Roman date are bi-conical, a Roman date for this weight is unlikely. Therefore, it is only possible to ascribe a broad date of 600 - 1700 AD to this particular weight due to its handmade and undiagnostic nature.

An irregularly shaped lead weight. This is likely to be a lead bi-conical spinndle whorl which has broken along the horizontal casting line. Weights of this style were in use from the Roman to Post-medieval times and so more accurate dating of this weight is problematic.
