A lead alloy perforated weight. The weight is 17.4mm in diameter and 17.2mm thick. It weighs 24.90g, or 0.9oz. It is spherical in shape, with a perforation running through it. The weight has a creamy white patina remaining on the inside of the perforation, with the outside a pale blue/grey. Helen Geake writes: "It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." Lead weights are very imperfectly un…

Both parts are open at one end. At the opposite ends the main part is rounded and convex and at this end the smaller projecting part tapers to a point where it is incomplete due to an old break. At the rounded end of the main part there are the remains of an iron …

A large, sub-circular fragment of iron working debris. It is hemispherical in section, perhaps suggesting it came from the base of a furnace of some kind. It measures 99.47mm in diameter, 45.52mm in thickness, and is too heavy for the scales. It is not possible to give a precise date for this object, but it should date from the Iron Age onwards.

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is discoid with bevelled edges and pentagon shaped in section. There is a large gash in one side. It has a diameter of 28.9mm and is 7.8mm thick. The whorl has a mid grey patina which is thin and appears to be more recent than many commonly seen. It is also decorated in an unusual way. The bevelled faces are decorated with close set radial lines. There is also a border of similar lines round the top face, but the centre is filled with a complex motif which is mainly obscured by the central perforation. The sides of the central perforation are strai…

Small fragment of an object; the fragment is too small to readily recognise what item it is part of but it is recorded in the hope that a parallel will be found in future. The fragment has a flat base with a semicircular end and straight sides; the other end is broken from an old break. From this base the piece thins, from 7.3mm to 2.8mm, and rises, roughly triangular in side view, with various curved mouldings. It is broken to one side and the top but the irregularity of the break suggests the larger piece had areas of open work. It is hard to date precisely but the regularity and del…
