Fragment of Roman flue tile, c.AD 43-410.
This is a fragment of a rectangular tile with flat faces, with broken edges and corners. The obverse is scored with regular lines to help mortar to adhere to the surface. The breaks around the edges mean that no corners survive that indicate whether this is a wall or floor tile.

Pottery. Fine oxidised fabric with slight mica dusting on its surface. Miniature wheel thrown-vessel, in the form of a jug with plain rim – no pouring spout – and with a biconical body with expanded pedestal base [turning lines on base] and with an applied corrugated strap handle with a trefoil lower end. Dark-stained on one side, chipped at rim. Probably a tourist souvenir from the Mediterranean. Post Medieval ceramic vessel fragment, c.AD 1550-1700.
This is possibly from the shoulder or rim of a large vessel, decorated with a thumb-pressed pie crust-style decoration. This sherd is from a salt-glazed stoneware jug, possibly of Cologne or Frechen ware. The fabric is hard fired and reduced grey throughout, with a brown-streaked glaze on the exterior.

A rim sherd from a jar of Roman Black Burnished ware (BB2). The fabric is reduced grey and sandy. The rim is everted and beaded; the original external diameter would have been c. 200mm. The exterior surface is burnished below the rim. Circa mid 2nd to 4th century AD.

An abraded rim sherd from a medieval glazed jar of orange sandy ware. The fabric is orange coloured with a reduced grey core and tempered with flint, chalk and calcite. The rim is everted and around 25.5mm wide with an original diameter around 200mm and a recessed seat for a lid. The inner surface has a dark green glaze which doesn't reach the rim.

A base sherd from a large post medieval salt-glazed stoneware jug, possibly of Cologne or Frechen ware. The fabric is hard fired and reduced grey throughout, with a brown-streaked glaze on the exterior. The vessel has a partial basal ring which would have been around 150mm in diameter and has thumb print indentations around the inside edge. The inner surface of the base is convex with a brown speckled glaze.

An incomplete (approx 1/4) Post Medieval ceramic delftware bichrome tin glazed wall tile dating to AD 1680-1750. Probably made in London. The tile is decorated with a central scene in blue and white depicting a castle or other building with a lake in front and a swan on the lake. Around this is a triple-line border with concave corner panels containing a floral motif. The reverse of the tile is unglazed.
