Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC.
Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.

A small fragment of hack silver dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000. The item is rectangular in plan with straight edges on all four sides. Both the top and bottom ends have vertical sides that are unaltered. However, the long edges on both sides display deep cuts that are 2/3 deep and cut from the rear of the item, the final 1/3 has a rough edge suggesting that the initial cut was not deep enough to sever it completely, making it necessary to finish the process by bending and snapping this section from its parent object.
Both the front and rear face…

The fragment consists of decorated silver plate attached to a piece of corroded iron. The silver plate has the form of a ninth century strap end but the presence of the iron points to it having had some other use. The incised decoration is in the ninth/early tenth century ‘Trewhiddle’ style but too little survives to allow a confident identification of the motifs used. These consist of a triangular panel filled with oblique lines, a feature difficult to parallel. Through this panel are two leaf tendrils. To the left of the panel is a crescent panel containing further leaves…

Description: An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver strap end, of Thomas' Class A, Type 1, dating c.AD 800 – 900, with Trewhiddle style decoration.
The surviving portion of plate is sub-oval in shape and rectangular in cross-section, perforated with two attachment rivets. The sides of the plate bow gently before tapering to an uneven transverse break. Between the two attachment holes is decoration in the form of two parallel horizontal grooves. Below this, across the surface of the plate, are multiple decorative panels, amongst which are the flattened circula…

Treasure case 2023 T420
Description:
A fragment of an early medieval silver bossed penannular brooch dating to c.AD 875-950.
The object is a fragment with worn edges on each side and is decorated on both faces. The front face is decorated with raised concentric circles focused around a rivet hole that held a now missing boss. The circles consist of a thick circular band immediately around the perforation, a second thinner band encircles this which is followed by a third circle made of small pellets. A fourth and final circle encompasses the circles within and appears to extend furthe…

An Early Medieval Trewhiddle style silver strap end dating from AD 750 - 950. It is of Thomas Class A, type 1 with a zoomorphic terminal and Trewhiddle style decoration. It may possibly fit into Class A, type 1bii with four fields, or 1biii which has more than four fields of Trewhiddle style decoration.
The closed end is a narrow rectangular projection forming a zoomorphic terminal in the form of a beast's head. The snout, bulbous eyes and long looped ears are clearly defined. The body of the strap end is unusually rounded, but still oval in plan. A plain bord…

An incomplete and bent composite silver pin, possibly an Irish ring headed type dating c. AD 950-1050.
The shank and head of the pin survives with the ring missing. The globular head has flattened sides each containing a circular recess or socket 0.81mm in diameter. The head measures 4.26mm high, 3.97mm wide and 3.01mm thick. The shank appears to be inserted into the head of the pin rather than integral and has a circular section. The shank terminates in a sharp point. The shank is bent in two places where the metal surface has laminated at the external edge of the bend…

Broad period: ROMAN

Description: A Roman or Viking silver 'finger ingot'
The ingot is cylindrical in shape with one mostly flat terminal from which it narrows to a dull rounded point. The surface is pitted in places. The object is a dark grey colour.
Dimensions: The ingot is 44.2mm long, 6.5mm in diameter and weighs 8.96 grams.
Discussion: The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeological context for most finds of finger-ingots make firm dating difficult. Richard Hobbs has highlighted that the ingot conforms to around 8 Roman scruples (a scruple is 1/24th of a ounce) whilst Gareth…

Two cut pieces of silver bar, consistent with Viking arm-rings of the late 9th and 10th centuries, possibly cut as hack-silver for use in a bullion economy.
Item1 is slightly curved in plan and has a trapezoidal cross section. It has been cut both ends. The lower, largest edge has an incised line through the centre of the length, dividing the bar into two fields. The uppermost field has a very precisely drawn six-pointed star formed of three crossed lines. The precision of this symbol suggests a later, possibly modern date for this item, but both the section and the slight curve are c…

Description: Complete gold ingot, long with rounded ends and oval cross-section. One surface is smooth with a few large dents; the other is pitted with very many small dents. One end is slightly wider and substantially thicker due to a rise in the pitted surface; the smoother surface is fairly flat. The colour is very slightly pale, suggesting a relatively impure gold.
Dimensions: Length, 40.9mm. Maximum width, 13.3mm. Maximum thickness, 8.8mm. Weight 37.39g.

The ring is thicker on one side than the other and has a rounded, faceted section; diameter (external), 17.5 - 18.5 mm; diameter (internal), 9 - 10 mm. It is decorated round the girth with a row of punched dots, except on the thinner side where they are missing for about a quarter of the circumference, apparently because of heavy wear at this point. The upper and lower faces of the ring have been repeatedly nicked with the point of a knife in antiquity to test the metal, which has roughened the surface.

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 99%; it weighs 23.11 grams.
The fragment has been cut, possibly with a chisel, from one end of a cigar-shaped ingot of rounded trapezoidal section; length, 25 mm; width, 16.3 mm. It would have been cast in a simple, open-topped mould cut in stone or drawn in the earth, and there is a slight lip along one edge where the metal has overflowed the mould. There are three parallel, transverse incisions in the top next to the cut and what appear to be three worn nicks, or tes…

An Early Medieval gold twisted wire finger ring. The finger ring is composed of two tapering, square-sectioned rods which are twisted, slightly irregularly, together. Each rod is at its thickest at the 'bezel' portion of the finger ring and on the outer face at this section. The hoop on the inner portion, opposite the 'bezel', has a gap. It appears that the terminals of the two rods are not co-joined to each other forming a loop, instead they form a penannular loop which is possibly intentional. Each terminal has one rod which has been slightly coiled and flattened to f…

A finger-ring or ear-ring, the ring is penannular in shape, with an almost circular section tapering from 6mm to less than 1mm in diameter.
This piece is very similar in size and form to a gold piece found near the Fishergate site in York and identified as an ear-ring (Rogers 1993, no. 1373 and 1495, fig. 670(b), no. 5789), and a copper-alloy example from Thetford (Rogerson and Dallas 1984, p. 69, fig. 110 no. 21). This example appears too inflexible to have functioned as an ear-ring.
There is a larger silver example from Ireland, without a findspot (diameter about 3–4cm),…
