A worn and slightly clipped silver Medieval short cross penny of Richard I (1189-1199), struck by the moneyer Vlard, Canterbury mint. Class 4a, dating to AD 1194-1199. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, No. 968/1. The large annulet eyes of the bust, alongside the now heavily worn pelleted beard and crown with tri-pelleted cross suggest Class 4. The remnants of multiple curls to the side of the head also suggest Class 4a rather than 4b or c and make this coin a late edition of Richard I, rather than early John.
