Merovingian copy of a gold solidus, dating to the 6th or early 7th century The obverse is obviously initially copied from a coin of Anastasius (AD 491-518), but the actual type with the emperor holding a cross on globe is later, in use from the reign of Justinian I (AD 527-68) onwards.  In fact, the reverse type suggests that the coin types are copied from a gold solidus struck at Constantinople for Justinian I (MIB 6), the prototype being struck AD 537-42.  The name of Justininian has been replaced with that of Anastasius.  Therefore the piece probably dates to the lat…

Merovingian or Frisian gold solidus, uncertain mint and moneyer, 7th century AD, pierced for suspension. Obverse: Facing diademed bust derived from Byzantine prototype, blundered inscription. Reverse: Cross on globe, ɅR (reversed) to either side, BATONEAIC (partially retrograde and inverted). The design of the coin is ultimately derived from Byzantine prototypes, but seems in this instance to be copied from a coin of Arles in southern France, as signified by the letters AR in the reverse field. The obverse inscription appears to be completely blundered, and while it is possible to …

A gold solidus of Arichis II, dux of Benevento (Italy), probably Class I coinage of 758-765. See Grierson and Blackburn 1986 (Medieval European Coinage 1: The Early Middle Ages), 575, plate 50 (no 1096). The coin bears two cut marks at 1 and 5 o'clock respectively, both of which cut through the coin in a straight line, angled toward a point just right of centre. The cuts do not meet, however, so that the coin remained intact. These cut marks may represent an aborted attempt of 'hacking' the coin for gold - a practice common in the Early Medieval period.

A gold-plated imitation of a Merovingian solidus from the mint of Marseilles, probably from the very late sixth or seventh century, which has been pierced for suspension, and subsequently broken. The obverse shows a crude diademed bust, facing to the right. There are traces of lettering in the field in front of the bust but only the edges of the letters are visible, as the letters were mostly beyond the break line. The design is very similar to a coin in the Fitzwilliam Museum, attributed to Sigebert III (639-56), also pierced for suspension. The reverse has a typical cross on globe d…
