The formula COSIII appears on coins of Hadrian from 119 onwards. Dr Richard Abdy kindly comments that he refers to such double headed coins as 'Medallic Asses', and that one side of this coin appears to be from a hitherto unknown die.

Cliff Reeves has kindly suggested this object may be a medal. The bearded bust may well be Hadrian, but there is no indication as to the identity of the other person portrayed. A possible candidate may be Hadrian's male lover Antinous (circa 110-132), who was depicted in contemporary sculpture as youthful, unshaven, and either partially draped or tastefully naked. However, Antinous appears on eastern coins with longer more flowing hair than is represented here.

Hadrian's personal sexual orientation was homosexual, and Antinous was 'the perfect eromenos for Hadrian. He was accounted beautiful by all that beheld him, was said to have great intelligence and a sharp wit, and was a great hunter and athlete'. The death of Antinous, in Egypt at the age of between 20 and 23, deeply saddened the Emperor, who founded a city in his honour and proposed his deification (Hadrian and Antinous, on-line essay by Andrea Marie Brokaw, April the 13th, 1998, consulted 22 March 2012).

Hadrian's sexual preference excited no particular comment or disapprobation among contemporaries: relationship between an older man and a younger had been an aspect of Greek education in adolescence, was sanctioned by affection between heroic figures such as Achilles and Patroclus, and incurred opprobrium only if a dominant older partner were to adopt feminine or inferior roles (Catherine Johns 1982, Sex or Symbol, Erotic Images of Greece and Rome, Book Club associates and the British Museum, 99-104).

Suggested date: Roman, 130-140.

Diameter: 26.7mm, Weight: 13.18gms, die axis: 6.

"datefound1":"2012-02-21","datefound2":null
Bust of Hadrian bearded and draped right.
