A copper alloy early medieval coin; a styca probably of Aethelred II, probably first reign, dating from AD 840 - 844. The extant legible legend on the obverse side reads EDLR[...] REX retrograde. The reverse side suggests FORDR[ED]. Issued by the moneyer Fordred and probably from Group C. Pirie (1996) motif 1, a plain cross, on both faces. The coin is 13.4mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 0.83g.
