A copper alloy anthropomorphic artefact of probable Early Medieval date, AD 400 - 600. It is a sub-triangular shape in plan with a straight (but broken) top, parallel upper sides, and lower sides that taper inwards to a rounded end. The front is moulded into a human face with a plain forehead, bulbous eyes in rounded concave areas, an angular projecting nose, and curved lines running from the base of the nose up around the eye sockets. An oval dimple in the pointed end may be intended as a mouth, or may be damage. The face is convex and three dimensional. The reverse is …

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast sub-trapezoid plate with three slightly concave sides and a button stud projecting from the centre of its plain back. The display side retains a double linear border which has trapped relicts of presumably formerly more extensive gilding. The finder suggests this might be a fragment of an 8th-century chip carved pin and posits a possible reuse as Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian ‘hack’ – a fragment intended for reuse. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-800 Length: 11mm, Width: 14.5mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 0.89gms

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A neatly solid cast cylinder with an integrally cast shank of diameter 3mm projecting from the centre on one side, surviving shank length 11.5mm. The shank bears lateral chatter marks, which was a feature noted on the shanks of copper alloy pins from Middle Saxon Flixborough, and which might commend an identification as a pin fragment. The other end of the cylinder is thickly plated with white metal, presumably silver. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 17.9mm, Diameter: 8.4mm, Weight: 4.32gms

Copper alloy unidentified object. The odd combination of a small pin with a small flat-topped globular head and a prominent collar and with a shank of undifferentiated section in so far as it survives [Flixborough type 111], which has been passed through or tightly wrapped around by a small ring of band width 4mm and thickness 3.5mm whose projecting end appears drawn out. This compact arrangement would not be easily accomplished using cold metal, but its achievement with heated metal would also be difficult, while its function is also unknown. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-850 L…

The two heads have a circular eye and surrounding lines defining features. There are three open work holes, one at each neck and one above the heads, under the knop. A gilded, copper alloy and iron object, possibly a dagger or knife pommel, a mount or a shield boss of probable Early Medieval date, about AD 600 - 700.   The piece is sub circular in plan with a flat top and domed reverse. It appears to be a flat gilded copper alloy cap over a central iron object. It is not clear how much is missing from the sides. It is decorated with interlaced ribbons which have border lines filled with a row of dots. It appears to be in Salin style II, but in an unusual figure of eight composition, forming a mat that covers …

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment; the finder kindly suggests this to be part of a clothing fastener. Cast plate, broken on all its edges, bearing a probably symmetrical anthropomorphic motif of paired eyes as oval doubled rings with three ridges suggesting a nasal bar between them. The back is plain, so a function as a mount might also be entertained. Among fasteners, this recalls the lower part of a cruciform brooch, though there is no trace of pin gear. The object may be gilded though thisis concealed by treatment with oil or Vaseline.Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-850…

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A small U-shaped tab with a drilled hole of diameter 2mm, presumably a fixing or suspension point from a larger object. Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast rectangular plate with a small twisted projection at one corner. The display side bears a sunken panel of what the finder kindly describes as chip carving – a strand and loop of simple interlace appear against a gilded ground apparently limited by the borders of the panel. Accompanying objects might suggest an Early Anglo-Saxon date, but the gilding might equally appear in Middle Saxon times.
