An incomplete cast copper-alloy early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) small long brooch dating to c.AD 450-550. Penn and Brugmann (2007) Sm2 or Sm3.
Only the headplate and part of the bow has survived. The headplate comprises a trefoil head with three projecting sub-rectangular lobes with semi-circular cut aways at each angle. The bow springs from the headplate; it has a D cross-section and is decorated on the convex side with oblique indentations where the bow meets the headplate, creating a trapezoidal block at the upper portion of the bow. Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment. Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The su…
