A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy quatrefoil mount (c. 1500-c. 1700 AD).<\/p>\n
The mount is quatrefoil-shaped in plan with a small projection at each angle. The front is flat. At the rear it has two integral tapering spikes, rectangular in cross-section. These are bent inwards.<\/p>\n
The front has traces of an olive green patina with flecks of white metal, probably tinning. The rear face and the spikes are reddish brown.<\/p>\n

An almost complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy mount (c. 1500-c. 1700 AD).<\/p>\n The mount is sub-triangular in plan, convex at the front and largely concave at the rear. It has a trefoil knop at each end and at the front the main body has two slightly raised parallel bands. At the rear, the main body is convex and both knops are flat. At the junctions of each knop and the main body of the mount there is a central integral spike, circular in cross-section. Only the stubs of the spikes survive.<\/p>\n The metal is reddish brown and has traces of a shiny dark green patina.<\/p>\n 38.76 x 11.52 x 5.62mm. Its internal and external surface is partly reddish-yellow (Munsell Color 5YR 6\/6), which is the colour yielded by a characteristic oxidised crust which is usually weakly visible due to a more general darkening of the final surface burnishing. The colour produced by burnishing is usually very dark grey (Munsell Color 5YR 3\/1) but hints of the reddish sub-surface is ever present in the form of oxidised patches or a general speckling. On a few pots the burnish has seemingly failed and the whole the whole of the surface may be reddened. In such cases the oxidised sub-surface may tend to decay and laminate. A macroscopic examination of the core of a typical Vectis ware sherd reveals 10-20% sub-angular medium quartz sand...The Combley [Roman Villa, Isle of Wight] kiln bars show 20% honey and milky translucent quartz grains but in other variants black morion quartz and shell sea sand have been noted. Vectis ware may be decorated with burnished hatching which, like that on black burnished ware, is frequently difficult to discern. The head is plain and the joining 'rib' is quite prominent.<\/p>\n Height: 15.36; diameter: 11.48mm. Weight: 1.39g.<\/p>\n Similar buttons have been illustrated and published (Read 2005: 85), which are described as Stuart in date. An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle plate and pin (c. 1270-c. 1350 AD).<\/p>\n The plate is sub-rectangular in plan and the loop is missing. At the loop end it is straight and has a circular pin hole, 4.36mm in diameter. Close to this hole there is another smaller hole. At the opposite end, the sides of the plate taper and then expand to form a fan-shaped projection. At the centre of the narrowest part at this end there are the remains of a copper-alloy rivet. The front of the plate is decorated with stamped ring-and-dot motifs and the rear face is plain. The wire pin is copper-alloy.<\/p>\n This object is corroded and has an olive green patina at the front.<\/p>\n 27.96 20.27 x 3.17mm. Weight: 4.15g.<\/p>\n This buckle can be compared with a similar object from a late 13th- or early 14th-century context in London, which is identified as a strap-end (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 132, fig. 85, ref: 608). The London example has completely lost its buckle frame, but its identity as a buckle is suggested by the large circular hole at one end which is hard to explain except as a pin hole. \nThe frame is sub-oval in plan, convex at the front and flat at the rear. On the front, the outer edge is slightly widened and has a central pin-rest in the form of a shallow notch. The bar is rectangular in cross-section. The copper-alloy tapering pin is rectangular in cross-section throughout its length. It has a length of 21.31mm and a width of 4.14mm at the loop.
\n21.31 x 27.40 x 2.33mm. Weight: 3.73g.
\nThe frame has a green patina and the pin is green and corroded.
