Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy buckle pin with violin-shaped 'shield'. The 'shield' is flat and thick with an outcurved base and concave sides, and a straight edge from which the shaft of the pin projects. The shaft is thick and D-shaped in cross-section, and tapers from its junction with the 'shield' to its end, which curves downwards. There are traces of iron corrosion on the reverse of the 'shield' from a separate iron loop, which would have hinged the pin to the buckle's bar. Early Anglo-Saxon, 6th or 7th century.

Cast copper alloy buckle with composite plate. The buckle frame is D-shaped, wider at the lip and has two incised transverse lines on the face-centre. The single sheet plate is folded over the buckle bar and has three (and the remains of one other) drilled rivet holes containing iron corrosion. The pin is threaded through a hole drilled through the plates just before the buckle bar, therefore securing the two parts together.

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A late Roman, copper-alloy prick spur. The arms are crescent-shaped in plan, D-shaped in cross-section and would have terminated with a riveted circular plate. The back of the spur is defined by a moulded rosette with a rivet hole in the centre. An incomplete, forward-facing hook extends above the prick. On other examples this prick terminates with a birds-head. This spur belongs to the dominant British type that is characterised by riveted plates at either end of the arm and a forward facing hook above the prick.1 Examples of this type found in dated contexts consistently indica…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: ROMAN

Cast copper alloy framed zoomorphic razor handle in the form of a griffin's head. The neck of the griffin is broken just before it would have split into two to clasp a wide flat iron blade. The face of the griffin is very worn, however there appears to be a patch of dark coloured enamel where the eye would have been. Razors such as this example would have been used to shave the beard, and known examples from Britain have been studied by Boon (1991). There are various forms of razor handles, and the earliest show celtic influence, such as the celtic ox-headed handle from Heppenhein nea…
