A cast copper-alloy fragment possibly from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The weighty object is trapezoidal in cross-section. It narrows from a thickness of 18.75mm at one end through a curve to 9.3mm at the other, which is broken as a result of old damage. The thicker end seems complete and angled other than a central protrusion, broadly circular in cross-section and seemingly truncated. On the lower surface of the thinner end is a low ridge, just off centre with possible traces of solder around it. The object has a variable mid-/light-green patina with some patches of off-white cor…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy key. The cast bit of a rotary key with a short round stem, either detached from the further extent of a separate stem or broken at a constriction. The end of the bit is hollow, suggesting use with the substantial fixed lock of a door, and a single cleft appears in the front and back of the bit. A further downward projection or ward flanked by three vertically incised grooves is an unusual elaboration, and perhaps an unfortunate one as lengthening the bit in this direction would significantly increase the stress imposed when the key was turned; it does indeed appear slight…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) vessel leg from a ewer or skillet with a horizontal band at the ankle and broken just above. It measures 37.13mm in length and weighs 56.42g. At the break, which is triangular in cross-section, it measures 23.11x11.33mm. Below the ankle, the foot widens into three toes, 25.34mm wide and 16.45mm thick. Much of the patina is lost and a thick black coating is apparent on both front and back of the leg. This is probably the result of the vessel's usage in cooking over an open fire. Crudely made cast copper alloy vess…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire

Lead and iron weight. Cast conical weight with an apical iron suspension loop. The flat base would permit this to be used as a standing weight as well as with a beam balance. Various diagonal scars may be adventitious damage, but if so were incurred in antiquity as they, like the rest of the object, are patinated. Though the suspended form is often ascribed to the Roman period, a conical form is commonly ascribed to smaller medieval weights made for other purposes. The mass of this example may represent a one half of a Tower pound (350gms), a measure used between the late 11th century…

Medieval dagger guard made from copper alloy, pointed-oval in shape and curved or crescentic in side view; the cross-section is sub-rectangular.
