Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a large bowl or cooking vessel with an internally bevelled rim that is semi-circular in section and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly to suggest a reasonably deep straight-sided bowl or a deep straight-sided everted rim, as seen on cauldrons, and the curvature of the rim suggests a large diameter of about 320 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 4.7 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 4 mm thick. Egan (2005) illustrates a similar example of a bowl fragment with a flared rim and straight…

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Robust cast hook with a waisted lug for rotating suspension, which would necessarily engage a slot or socket. Diagonal striations may be file or wear marks and appear on both sides of the hook and along its back edge. Amy Downes kindly corrects an initially imprecise identification with reference to find BH-D62546, suggesting this to be a a vessel handle lug. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 25.8mm, Width: 13.7mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 9.69gms

A Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic vessel spout probably dating to the 15th century AD. The cylindrical spout was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via the long sloping 'C' shaped arm. The spout itself is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth from which protrudes the end of the spout. The dog's head has a moulded nose, prominent, rounded brow and sub-oval ears that extend slightly above the flattened head; the eyes are not distinguished. These artefacts are pouring spouts likely to be from a pedestal based ewer like a priests washing bow…

A cast copper-alloy fragment possibly from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The weighty object is trapezoidal in cross-section. It narrows from a thickness of 18.75mm at one end through a curve to 9.3mm at the other, which is broken as a result of old damage. The thicker end seems complete and angled other than a central protrusion, broadly circular in cross-section and seemingly truncated. On the lower surface of the thinner end is a low ridge, just off centre with possible traces of solder around it. The object has a variable mid-/light-green patina with some patches of off-white cor…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) vessel leg from a ewer or skillet with a horizontal band at the ankle and broken just above. It measures 37.13mm in length and weighs 56.42g. At the break, which is triangular in cross-section, it measures 23.11x11.33mm. Below the ankle, the foot widens into three toes, 25.34mm wide and 16.45mm thick. Much of the patina is lost and a thick black coating is apparent on both front and back of the leg. This is probably the result of the vessel's usage in cooking over an open fire. Crudely made cast copper alloy vess…

An incomplete Medieval to Late Post-Medieval (1200-1800) copper alloy foot from a cooking vessel, standing 30.32mm in height and weighing 83.71g. It measures 39.66x13.40mm at the break and 32.53x15.21mm at the base, which is broadly rectangular. The face has a prominent central midrib and shallower ribs flanking either edge. The metal is rather corroded and almost no original patina remains. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1800 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003; 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking ves…

A cast copper alloy leg /foot from a copper alloy vessel probably a jug or ewer of later medieval or early post medieval date (1350-1650). It is possible due to the small size that this example maybe from a handle rather than foot. The foot is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with an oval (D shaped) faceted cross section. The lower leg has a n external rib running down its apex. The foot tapers from the top to the base. At the base it is broken. The upper edge of the leg is flat with a smooth dished (internal) surface. The outer / external edge at this point shows heavy abrasion where…

Pot sherd of Roman date. The sherd may be a rim sherd with a simple upright rounded rim but due to abrasian of the edges it is not possible to be entirely certain (NB. The photo shows the possibly rounded rim edge at the bottom of the photo). The sherd also has a narrow undulating flange running around the vessel. When whole the vessel was probably a jar or possibly a bowl. The fabric is creamy-white in colour, with notable reddish iron-staining. Although not the typical mortaria product this fabric probably belongs to the Mancetter-Hartshill type series. It is creamy-white in colou…

Mis-cast copper alloy foot from a Medieval or Post Medieval cooking pot. The foot is trapezoid in section with a wider front than back. There is a raised rib running down the centre of the front. It expands in width and thickness to make the foot. The leg rises at 60 degrees from the foot. The front of the foot and the lower right side is missing and there is an irregular break across the top. The entire piece has a bubbly structure which suggests mis-casting. It is 35.7mm tall, 40.8mm wide and 19.8mm thick at the base; it weighs 48 grams. Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) sugges…

A copper-alloy pot leg of Medieval to early post-Medieval date. The steeply-angled leg has a broadly oval cross section with slightly flattened sides. the foot is flat at the bottom and widens towards the tip. A parallel for this leg - suggested to be from a small cauldron, ewer or jug - was found in excavations in Winchester (Biddle 1990: 956/fig. 293, no. 3397), in a late 15th to early 16th century context. Another similar leg came from an early 15th century context in London (Egan 1998: 166/fig. 132, no. 459) and is recorded as probably being part of a tripod ewer.

Incomplete white-metal vessel handle of probable 18th century date. The handle is roughly C-shaped and cast in pewter, with a break at the top and base of the handle, probably the weak points. The handle has a decorated top, with a concave plate that probably gave way to a scrolling extension, though this is now incomplete. The base of this extension, however can be seen abutting a cylindrical shape on the underside with the appearance of a lug, though without any fixtures relating to it. Below the plate on the top of the handle is a flower, and from this point the handle tapers in…
