Description Silver strap-end with incised zoomorphic designs, set against a niello background. The sides of the strap-end are of slightly convex form, and the border is notched to form a coarsely beaded band. The split attachment end has two circular rivet holes (one retaining its rivet), below which is a centrally placed, incised, trilobate palmette motif. There is a main centrally placed panel of two intertwined sinuous creatures with forelegs, heads in profile with single ears and dots for eyes, whose bodies have devolved into ribbon-like interlace. A cast copper alloy Medieval strap end, probably dating from the 14th century. It is sub rectangular in plan, and has a trefoil end with a rounded projection below the trefoil and another narrow oval projection below this. The back plate appears to have broken away just below the first rounded projection. There is a rivet remaining joining the two plates in the middle of the rounded projection, but only the one plate remains below this point and it is broken off with no rivet holes remaining. The strap end has a patchy green patina and has been bent in the plough soil. One side …

A cast copper alloy strap end. In plan the strap end is an elongated sub-oval. The strap end has decoration on the upper plate which has an abraded animal head terminal. Behind the head there is a single panel depicting an elongated triple stranded 'X' shape formed by to crescents back-to-back. These are linear and ribbed. In the fields around this 'X' shape there are further small blocks. In profile the strap end appears to be solid at the zoomorphic terminal, but then does divide into two plates, forming a slim 'Y' profile. This divided terminal is abraded, and there are the remains…

A plate from a copper alloy Medieval strap end dating from 1270 - 1450 AD. The plate is tongue shaped with a scalloped attachment edge and round grooved aperture flanked by a copper alloy rivet with a flat head on each side. The closed end is pointed and has a projecting pointed tip. The reverse shows a scar where the forked spacer was soldered. The metal is grey green and probably has a high tin content. Compare number 653 and 654 on page 142 of Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories.

A slightly worn and corroded early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas' (2003, 2) Class A, probably Type 1 (Trewhiddle style). This would date the artefact to around the 9th century AD. The strap-end is generally flat in profile, but slightly splayed and abraded at the split attachment end. Copper alloy strap end. Cast zoomorphic split-ended strap end, of slightly waisted form and more elongated than most observed by this reporter. An elongated beast snout terminal with long and pointed lupine ears is, unusually, modelled on both sides. On that less worn side, the eyes are represented by a pair of tiny ring and dot, and whiskers are modelled running across the jowls. Behind the ears a bordered panel of angular interlace extends to the rear split end; it incorporates recurring triangular configurations. The border was observed on the reverse, though interlace was not carr…
