An elaborate cast copper-alloy Roman strap-fitting, the female part of a 'bar-and-keyhole' strap fastener, probably from a harness (1st century AD).
The object is in two, connected parts. The main element is a thick plate which was attached to a strap by way of two integral rivets located towards each end of the lower surface. The plate now measures 35.1mm. It is recessed at one end on its upper surface to accommodate a separate keyhole shaped fitting which slotted into the thickened plate and has a rod travelling through it such that it can hinge. Description: silver handle of a pair of scissors/ toilet implement, consisting of a finger loop and part of the arm. The arm is rectangular and 0.5cm from the base on both broad sides begins a chevron pattern, pointing towards the finger loop. A corroded cast copper-alloy mount (strap-fitting) of post-medieval date. The mount is flat and symmetrical. It has a trefoil terminal, below which a broadly trapezoidal body with flared and rounded lower terminal. The upper surface of the mount is decorated in low relief created through vertically symmetrical curving foliate patterns in the form of fronds emerging from the centre line. A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date (c. 17th century). The mount is formed of an openwork trefoil plate with a bifurcating collar below, the terminal of which would have curved back in a blunt hook, now missing. The upper lobe of the trefoil is perforated to receive a rivet; there is a further rivet hole central on the collar. In both holes the corroded iron remains of the rivets survive in situ.
