Copper-alloy annular brooch of probable Roman date. Broad band, slightly concave towards centre. Irregular, poorly abraded concentric band. On the reverse is a broken catchplate, and a single pin lug where the missing pin would have been attached. Both are set perpendicular to the edge of the brooch. Chipped slightly at periphery. Annular brooches are reasonably common in early Anglo-Saxon contexts, although the pin arrangement differs from this example in having a perforation through the band to take a pin. Therefore this example is unlikely to be early Anglo-Saxon in date. Com…

Cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch. The semi-cylindrical wings are undecorated. The spring, which has eight turns is secured by passing the external chord and the axial bar through a vertical plate with two perforations behind the head. The plate behind the head is carried over the top to form a crest. The flat front of the bow is decorated with incised rocker-arm ornament. The catchplate has a circular and triangular perforation. Even green patina. This brooch is very similar to examples from Stonea, Cambs (Mackreth 1986, 306 nos. 27-9 fig. 95).
