The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change: soldini in fact occur as English finds more…

Apparently complete but worn cast copper alloy decorative plaque, possible belt fitting or mount of Roman date. The plaque (or plate) is sub-rectangular in plan and has a convex section profile from left to right. The back is plain but the front is decorated with the raised image of a boar running right. The boar is lacking detail but the eye, tusk, legs, tail & mane are all defined. The boar is closely framed within a rectangle of running diagonal lines which loosely gives the impression of a twisted rope border. The design and artefact are both very roughly executed with no fine…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative rear hook bow brooch. It is missing the wings, spring, pin, foot and catchplate due to old breaks. What survives of the wings suggests they were semi-cylindrical in form and may have been deliberately remove, although this may simply be the result of post-depositional damage. They are separated by an integrally cast rear facing hook. The head of the brooch is oval shaped in section with diagonal grooves on the underside that produce a triangular moulding on the underside of the bow/wings. The bow itself is oval shaped in sect…

Cast copper alloy pocket or portable sundial, circular in plan, and made up of two annular bands which have been soldered together internally where a semi-circular loop attaches them at their outer edges. The interior of the two rings is inscribed with the numbers 1 to 12, with 1 to 8 running along the inside of half of one of the h…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy plano-convex ingot, sub-triangular in plan and profile, and plano-convex in section. The fragment rises up from its semi-circular outer edge, which is about 10 mm in thickness, to the centre of the ingot, where it is broken, and 27 mm in thickness or height. The two sides which look deliberately waisted may have been filed after sections were taken out of the ingot, and have since worn smooth and corroded to form rounded yet defined rectangular edges. There are also a few pits in the base, side and upper surface, which were probably formed from air pock…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy (bronze) tanged chisel of possible Middle - Late Bronze Age date (1500 - 750 BC). The identification of this object as a chisel as well as the dating criteria are rather tentative. The artefact is incomplete and poorly preserved. The metal surface is also irregular being heavily cracked and laminated on one face and pitted and abraded on the other - there is also a suggestion that it may have been miscast. All these elements make a positive dated identification difficult.
The chisel fragment comprises the upper part of the blade, side projections / trunnions / …

Post Medieval cast lead nozzle from a powder flask used for measuring and pouring a charge of gunpowder, probably 17th century in date (Courtney 1988:2).
