A copper-alloy Colchester type two-piece brooch of 1st century AD date. The head of the brooch measures 14.6mm wide and has slightly recessed wings, one of which is now bent. The spring and pin are missing. The bow measures 7.2mm wide at the top and tapers to 4.4mm wide at the lowest surviving point. The overall length is 42.5mm long and the weight is 5.90g. The clean and straight nature of the bottom edge suggest that the lower part of the bow and the foot were deliberately cut off, rather than having been accidentally broken. The bow and head also appear to have been hamme…

A damaged and incomplete lead plaque of uncertain date. The object has been cast and would probably originally have depicted a classical style bust. It may be Roman in date or may be a much later decorative plaque from a funerary monument or garden ornament. Only the head-dress now survives. It is elaborate in design, with a pointed crown-like base and a scallop-shaped or acanthus leaf portion above. Extending from the left hand side (as you look at it) is a feather-like protrusion (now bent). It is likely that a similiar protrusion originally existed on the opposite side also.…

An important and unusual find of an 8th century, silver Anglo Saxon sceat of 'monitascorum' type. Normally this type has 'MONITA SCORVM' on the obverse, but in this case has the 'DE LVNDONIA' inscription of series L instead. Michael Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas' (Oxford, 1993), p. 435 noted one other specimen of this variant at the time of publication, which he described as a 'unique and highly interesting coin'. If the inscriptions are taken at face value this is an ecclesiastical issue ('Moneta Sanctorum') from London, presumably issued for a bishop of London. The coin recorded…

Roman cast copper alloy dolphin type brooch, 1st century. Most of the hinged pin is broken off. There is a faint narrow groove at the end of each of the circular sectioned wings. The bow is decorated with a longitudinal raised triangular sectioned ridge with transverse notches along its apex. There is no definite foot, the bow simply terminates. The catchplate is complete. Fine green-brown patina; the pin appears to be a different alloy, having much light green powdery corrosion. There appears to be white (lead alloy?) solder in the end of each wing, presumably securing the pin bar. Le…
