The cross arms are of almost equal length and have concave ends, each of which contains a round setting. Two of these still contain small cabochon garnets, one of them contains flat garnet and a fourth, larger stone mounted very crudely at the centre of the cross. Post medieval jewellery link; Small, oval gold link from a bracelet chain, pendant or other form of personal adornment. Dated to the 17th century, based on stylistic features. The main link is a three-dimensional oval 'box' with a faint line around one face, indicating that it was made separately and then attached to form the box-like structure. British Museum Report: "Date: 1700 Description: Gold mourning ring. D-shaped hoop. Inscribed to the inside 'S P obijt 20 June j700 aeta 28'. This inscription is followed by a maker's mark: 'M' in a rectangular punch. There are traces of black enamel within the lettering and the punch. Discussion: Mourning rings were usually made in memory of a recently deceased relation. Often money was left in wills with which to have a ring commissioned for this purpose. CORONER'S REPORT Description of Find The ring is substantially gold and consists of a broad, punch-decorated band tapering sharply at each end to wire terminals which were originally twisted together; width, 26 mm. On either side of a very worn, beaded median rib the ring is decorated with two rows of interlocking punched triangles with triple pellets in each. The ring has been distorted while in the ground and the ends are now almost untwisted as a result.
