Treasure number 2007 T639 Post Medieval gold finger ring: The ring is squashed and damaged, now a flattened oval measuring 21.67mm by 11.36mm wide. The band is 3.13mm wide, 1.42mm thick. It weighs 2.45 grams. British Museum Report: This ring is very damaged and the surface much worn. There appear to be traces of an inscription but it is not legible. It was examined by both the Medieval and Post-Medieval curators at the British Museum but neither could be certain of its date. In these circumstances it is not possible to confirm that it is more than 300 years old, and as such it fails t…

Treasure case 2007 T575. A small spherical droplet of gold, measuring 5.5mm in diameter and weighing 4 grams. The surface is smooth and only slightly pitted. There is no decoration though some evidence for small hammer marks on the rod. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

2006 T607 'Witham area', Essex. Plain gold ring consisting of a hoop with circular cross-section, bent into a V shape. No dimensions taken. This object was reported as potential Treasure, but at the time was thought to be a modern ring, less than 300 years old, bent out of shape. It therefore did not qualify as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996. Subsequent to the return of this item in 2007, specialists had cause to examine the photograph again and conceded that there were similarities between this piece and examples of V-shaped finger-rings attributed to the Iron Age (…

Treasure Number: 2006 T447. Post Medieval gold mourning ring dated to 1674. The band is simple, with a small engraving of a skull on the exterior. The hoop has an external diameter of 17.31mm, an internal diameter of 14.65mm, is 3.48mm wide, 1.11mm thick and weighs 2.51g. CORONER'S REPORT Description A late Bronze Age penannular gold ring of oval cross-section. The piece originally had alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold although this is now barely visible except internally where the surface is less worn. Measurement of specific gravity indicated that it comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Composition Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of a very worn striped penannular ring indicated for the yellow stripes a gold content of 79-83% , a silver content of 13-17%, the remainder being copper. The gold…

CURATOR'S REPORT Early Medieval gold and garnet setting. Possibly 7th century. Description of find Fragment of an early medieval, torn and distorted gold setting, still containing some ?garnet cloisonné. In a separate bag, two tiny garnet fragments and a small fragment of wavered gold foil with an upright cell wall. The gold setting appears to have been one end of an originally ?oval (presuming that it was symmetrical) object. The size and spacing of the letters is a little irregular but they are neatly cut with well-formed seriphs. They retain much of their black-coloured inlay, probably niello.
