Object type: BELL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). The bell is corroded but appears to be made from a single piece of iron that has been folded in two; the seam, which is located to the side, is now open and was presumably once riveted together. The bell has pulled shoulders, which results in a very narrow apex. In plan the bell is sub-oval. A ring was set in the top of the bell which served both as a handle and for a suspension of the clapper. The former is evidenced by two small knobs of iron at the apex; the latter is perhaps …

PAS-RC07 Grid F6 Five sherds from Severn Valley coarseware pottery vessels. As the fabric, colour and thickness differs in each sherd it is likely that different vessels are represented in the assemblage. Not enough survives of the sherds to indicate the form or overall vessel size. The sherds date from the Roman period (50 - 410). All the sherds are irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in profile. The sherds are also worn and abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The fabric is a relatively soft fired earthenware with a number of small angular and s…

PAS-RC07 Grid F5 Sherd of Roman Severn Valley Ware Mortaria. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with sparse angular and sub angular quartz and grit inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a mid buff brown and the outer colour is a lighter mid buff. There is not enough of the body of the mortaria surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape or diameter of the vessel. The sherd measures 40.3mm length, 30.6mm width, is 18mm thick and weighs 20.9 grams.

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval (1200-1500) lead circular seal matrix, very crude and worn and depicting a possible animal at the centre and an inscription around, reading + SIGI ?L (although this could be the back leg of the animal) ?H : The edges are mostly missing through damage and wear. With the cross set at 9 o'clock, the legend begins just after 12 o'clock and finishes at 6 o'clock. This also means that if the central device is a four legged animal with only its two forelegs on display, it would be the right way up. However the large egg-shaped head appears to have a tail (left) and head with cur…
