PAS-RC07 Grid F8 A rim sherd of Samian type Roman pottery. The fabric hard and fine grained with mica inclusions. The fabric is assessed by observation of worn rather than fresh breaks. The slip / glaze is abraded and worn and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherd has been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal the buff orange brown coloured fabric beneath. This type of fabric and glaze is best compared to that of Central Gaul (Leroux) which is commonly found in Britain (www.worcestershireceramics.org). The rim is too small to have any remains of moulding or decoration…

PAS-RC07 Grid F8 Nineteen sherds from Severn Valley coarseware pottery vessels, including two rims. As the fabric, colour and thickness differs in each sherd it is likely that different vessels are represented in the assemblage. Not enough survives of the sherds to indicate the form or overall vessel size. The sherds date from the Roman period (50 - 410). All the sherds are irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in profile. The sherds are also worn and abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The fabric is a relatively soft fired earthenware with a number …

Cast lead-alloy pilgrim badge of the 'head reliquary' of St Thomas Becket. It is in the shape of the bust (head and shoulders) of the saint, shown wearing a bishop's mitre and an elaborate collared amice (an ecclesiastical vestment covering the shoulders). The face is schematic, with large eyes under eyebrows, a bold nose and a possible moustache. The mitre has a band around its lower edge and up the centre, decorated with ring-and-dot to indicate jewels; its outer border has plain beading. An outward-curling lock of hair escapes from each side of the mitre. The wide upright collar o…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Post-medieval spur arm terminal, dating from the 17th century. The spur arm has three openwork elements of a rectangular, triangular and semi-circular form. There is evidence that the object is incomplete through the presence of small extension from both the rectangular and triangular elements. The corroded remains of an iron loop is retained through one of the holes in the semi-circular element. Similar examples have been recorded on this database, including GLO-B47026, WMID-27A6E4 and NMS-4D3753. Another example is known from Exeter, which, along w…
