A silver Medieval "fede" type finger ring which is inscribed on the outside of the hoop. The inscription is difficult to read because of damage, but appears to read: "C' IL (M)RONE(WH)•IALEALA". The bezel is in the form of clasped hands but has been twisted and bent inwards and the hoop is broken. The rest of the hoop is rectangular in section and fairly crude. Lovers' 'Fede' type rings are well known and a number of complete and fragmentary examples have been recorded under the Treasure Act (eg 2007 T49; 2007 T107; 2007 T342; and 2010 T158).Co…

A copper alloy medieval mount decorated with enamel and gilding (c. late 13th century to early 14th century). The mount is an approximately triangular shape, and has a horse's head in profile with a semi-circular crest on the top. The crest has incised line decoration suggesting a plume of feathers, and there is a single rivet hole at the centre. An incomplete cast copper-alloy heraldic harness mount of medieval date. It is missing most of the integrally cast rivet at the centre of the reverse due to old breaks. The mount is flat and lozenge-shaped, and has moulded and enamelled heraldic decoration on the front face. This comprises a narrow border within which is the heraldic device that may be described as 'Gules crusily and a chevron argent' (a silver chevron within a red background sprinkled with crosses). Sheet copper alloy bell of medieval date, probably from horse harness. Conical bell with an elongated oval suspension loop with (now broken) aperture of length 2.5mm. The body of the bell was formed of beaten sheet metal of a thickness varying from 0.4mm to 1.3mm, rolled to form a cone with a butted seam up the reverse. The loop is pierced from side to side, and projects slightly to the front. Now squashed and distorted, there is no sign of a clapper, and there may not have been one; it is most likely that this bell originally had four lobes at the base that were bent in together to r…

Silver mount. Cast plate in the form of a cross potent, now roughly folded and flattened. The motif might be apt to the decoration of the cover of a missal, breviary or reliquary. A symbol resembling two conjoined lozenges is stamped into the bar at the end of one of the arms. When combined with smaller similar crosses in its angles, this symbol would become the Cross of Jerusalem, the badge of that Crusader kingdom - the military Orders held extensive lands in eastern England, though their local importance was primarily economic. This object is to be considered as Treasure on account…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire

Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast hexagonal-section handle with apical suspension loop. A strongly defined device is incised in a circular die. This illustrates a contraction mark resembling a yoke, surmounted by a cross potent; the ends of the 'yoke' are trifid, probably representing lis. Below this is a central pellet, above the letters IhC (for Jesus Christ). Malcolm Jones kindly read the inscription, which is set between two grooves, as the common *PRIVE SV* (I am private). The egg-waisted form of the S indicates an early 14th-century date, 1300-1350. Diameter: 19.4mm, Height: 2…

Lead seal matrix, pointed-oval with a central motif of a cross with split and curled ends. A partially surviving legend appears to read: +S' IOhIS FIL' FVCAR-ATE (Seal of John son of... ) with a squiggle between the apostrophe after S and the start of IOhIS, and a possible missing letter between the R and the A, and space for two or three letters after the end of the inscription. The FV may alternatively read PV. IOhIS is an abbreviated form of the name John. On the back, a symetrical motif resembles a fleur-de-lis; it has two leaves and possibly a flower between them, the latter…
