Object type: PIN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper alloy pin dating from the Medieval period. It has a circular head created by winding five turns of copper wire around the upper end of the shaft, giving the head a grooved appearance. The shaft is narrow and of the same diameter for much of its length, tapering only to a point at the end. As is often the case with these pins, it is bent in the middle of the shaft. The total length of the shaft is 72.6mm; the head is 6.8mm in diameter. The pin weighs 2.87gm.
Pins of similar construction are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard, 1991, Dress Accessories c1150-c1450, page 301.

A medieval copper-alloy annular brooch. The frame is basically square, with each edge slightly incurved and in the shape of a profile animal head. The backs of the heads meet at the ears, which form a double projection at two opposite angles. One of these double projections is neat, but the other is less tidy and may be intended as a triple projection. In the centre of each side is an eye made from a circular cell, one of which retains a domed black glass or gem setting. The upturned snouts also each meet at an angle, one of which has a constriction for the copper-alloy pin; the other…

Silver mount. Cast plate in the form of a cross potent, now roughly folded and flattened. The motif might be apt to the decoration of the cover of a missal, breviary or reliquary. A symbol resembling two conjoined lozenges is stamped into the bar at the end of one of the arms. When combined with smaller similar crosses in its angles, this symbol would become the Cross of Jerusalem, the badge of that Crusader kingdom - the military Orders held extensive lands in eastern England, though their local importance was primarily economic. This object is to be considered as Treasure on account…
