Incomplete medieval gilded copper-alloy buckle frame. Part only of the cast openwork broad angled outside edge with vertical curling lobed tendrils between two robed seated figures. Both sides of the frame, the pin and the probably integral plate, are missing. The figures, both male, have their heads slightly inclined towards one another, as if in conversation. Both faces are worn, as are other exposed elements, with no surviving features although some indication of hairstyle remains. The left hand figure has both hands on his right knee which is raised and projects forward with his f…

A small copper alloy single loop D-shaped buckle frame with a sheet copper-alloy plate and copper-alloy wire pin still attached. The buckle has a pointed outer edge with a grooved pin rest. There also appears to be a decorative groove at either end of the bar, dividing it from the frame, although this may not be deliberate as the buckle is not well made. The frame is 21mm in length,13mm wide by 2mm thick. The plate shows signs of damage, with an apparently fragmentary edge. It was made by folding a strip of copper alloy sheet around the bar and cutting a pin slot. The plate is now …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy heraldic harness mount of medieval date. It is missing most of the integrally cast rivet at the centre of the reverse due to old breaks. The mount is flat and lozenge-shaped, and has moulded and enamelled heraldic decoration on the front face. This comprises a narrow border within which is the heraldic device that may be described as 'Gules crusily and a chevron argent' (a silver chevron within a red background sprinkled with crosses). Traces of a white-metal coating are visible on the chevron and some of the ten crosses surrounding it; the red enamel o…

A complete Medieval copper-alloy buckle plate. It is made from a piece of copper-alloy sheet bent in half to form a long rectangle, tapering slightly from hinged end to attachment end. The under plate is slightly shorter and narrower than the upper plate. The plate has slight damage where the buckle frame has been broken away from it, tearing through the two hinge loops. The breaks are old and worn. Front and back plates are held together by five copper-alloy rivets with round heads, two at each end and one in the centre. The surface of the front plate has an incised line around its b…
