Lead Weight. Cast cylindrical weight. Four gouges appear on one end. The mass may indicate this object to represent five units of 4.07gms, which was a sub-unit in the early medieval Scandinavian system of mensuration; if less precisely calculated, it may alternatively relate to an Anglo-Saxon system employing modules of 3.1gms, in which case it would be approximately 7 units. The match with the former system is closer, though neither seems to relate to the marks on the object which are without discernible significance. Suggested date: if a weight, Early Medieval, 850-1100. The form…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but distorted lead alloy finger ring. The ring is small, possibly for a child or little finger, and has a raised circular bezel that contains a dark blue galss or paste. Either side of the bezel on the shoulders is two smaller circular mouldings that may have once also contained inserts. The band extends from beneath the latter and is plain and circular in section. The ring is similar in form to some Roman finger rings, however the size, material used and quality may suggests a much later date, possibly the post-medieval or even early-modern period.

A fragment of an unidentified copper alloy object. The object comproses of three faceted sides, the external faces of which are decorated with punched dots arragned in ring-and-dot and other unidentifiable patterns. This appears to be small flecks of flint or stone and is reminiscent of prehistoric pottery fabric, having a 'biscuit-like' quality. The metal has a tinny tint to it. Further research is continuing to try and identify a function and date for this object.
