Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very worn and corroded crudely cast lead weight in the shape of cone. It is broadly triangular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand; the top has been bent to one side. It has a hole running right through its centre, Dia.: 3.5 - 4.4mm. The artefact now has an off-white surface with recesses and denting all over. Such objects are undiagnostic and a wide date range is here given.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is flat on both surfaces with a rectangular cross-section. It is basic and has suffered corrosion and bending and is 'decorated' with crude angular punch marks all over both surface. The artefact has a large central hole with a diameter of c. 8.8mm. The hole has a ridge around it on both surfaces presumably a product of its creation. The object is c. 4.5mm thick and weighs 21.98g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn…

An abraded base sherd possibly from a Roman vessel. It has an irregular shape. It is has a flat base with little sagging. One wall emerges at an angle of c. 140 degrees. The vessel has a light-grey interior but is an oxidised mid/light-orange colour on the internal surface, greyer on the base. It has fairly even shell tempering with some fragments up to c. 2.5mm long. It may be from the Roman kilns at Harrold, however a medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of uncertain date. The piece represents the distal end of the blade. The narrow, slender artefact is parallel-sided along much of its length, tapering to a blunt point. The cross section is lenticular, with a suggestion of a central ridge on each face. The surfaces are heavily corroded and the break appears to have occurred in antiquity. Dimensions: 48.6mm long, up to 9.2mm wide and 2.5mm thick. Weight: 4.82g. It is possible that this is the tip of an implement such as a dirk or rapier; however, its slender form suggests it is more likely to be…

A grey, stone spindle-whorl decorated with incised lines radiating from the central hole (for the wooden spindle). It's condition is worn and one or 2 pieces have flaked away from the surface. Its overall diameter is 46mm, and the central hole is 10mm. Difficult to date, spindle-whorls having been used from prehistory up into the post-medieval period.

Near complete cast copper alloy unidentified object of possible Roman date (due to association with other finds of Roman date & similar patination). Although superficially like a nail in appearance the item apears too finely crafted to have served this purpose and other uses such as possible pin have been considered but no parallel found at this time. The item, which is cast in one piece, consists of an semi-circular head with an elongated tapered shaft projecting from below the straight-edge of the semi-circle. The shaft immediately below the head is lozenge-shaped in section swell…

County: Essex

A cast copper alloy pin, of uncertain date, but from the chunkiness, probably Roman. The head is conical and is integrally cast with the shaft, which is roughly circular. The end of the shaft and point have broken away and are missing. The break is ancient and patinated. The shaft of the pin is bent. The metal is corroded and has a dark green patina. It is 42.1mm long and 10.9mm in diameter. It weighs 7.64gm. Although the metal appears to be ancient, the possibility that this is a Post Medieval to Modern coat hook cannot be ruled out.

An unidentified cast copper alloy artefact. Both ends are well worn breaks and not enough survives to be able to deduce the original shape. It consists of two circles of metal, one slightly larger than the other, joined together by a narrow, flat section of metal. Although they are cast in one piece, the casting has been made such that they appear to be constructed of a single strip of metal that has been coiled to make the circles, at least on one face. This illusion is continued on the larger of the circles as the 'coil' continues into a curved, tapering length of metal, now br…
