I have examined a coin reported found at Middle Rasen, Lincolnshire. It is a silver penny of King Charles I. It will therefore be of good silver, over 90% fine metal. The initial mark on the coin, which dates it, is not legible, but it was issued within the years c. 1632-4.
Single coins are not normally eligible for consideration as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act, but coins removed from currency by conversion into jewellery or other decorative function are so eligible. This coin has been pierced, fairly crudely, but in such a way that the king's head is upright, whi…

The pin-head is in the form of a human head with an elaborate head-dress, probably representing a helmet, consisting of a transverse, sub-triangular sectioned bar at the end of a short projection from the top of a diadem-like hat. The features are clearly modelled, with chin length hair protruding from the headdress, eyes, nose and mouth, and two possible indentation further defining the chin. The neck terminates in a triple moulded collar before the stub of a hexagonal sectioned shaft. Dr. A. Marsden comments "I think this is intended to be a Minerva …

An extremely worn and corroded possible copper-alloy coin weight of medieval or post-medieval date. It is circular and seemingly decorated unifacially, although both surfaces are highly corroded. The upper face appears to depicts a ship. It has a rounded circumference. The design and size of this coin weight are consistent with it relating to a noble, if anything. Withers & Withers (1995, 18-19) illustrate these 15th- and 16th-century coin weights.

Buckle. An oval, triangular sectioned frame, with a very short integral forked spacer, pierced for the sheet pin which has side flanges. The plate is formed from a single folded sheet, the fold at the attachment edge, with a slot cut through the fold which now contains corroded iron, probably the remains of an axis bar. This is presumeably a repair after the originally longer forked spacer broke. Frame measures 18 x 20mm. Plate measures 10 x 15mm. Dates to the 14th - 15th century.

The token is decorated on one side with five pellets arranged with four forming corners of a square with the fifth pellet roughly in the centre. The reverse surface is flat and undecorated. Lead and its alloys are very easy to work and tokens were often locally produced; therefore they are difficult to date and tokens with simple designs had considerable longevity. There are dated generally from c. 1250-1800 AD.

A piece of metalworking slag of unknown date. Light-weight, magnetised and slightly convex piece of slag, possibly part of a crucible, or maybe cinder slag. The material is pale grey in the centre; one surface is blackened and the other surface is dark brown in colour; it has a rough and pitted surface, glossy in places, with a purple sheen. Compare NSC Box 008 and NSC Box 032C in the National Slag Collection. Slag is very difficult to date but it is important as evidence of metalworking. This is likely to be Post Medieval to Modern in date.
