Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment from a 'fob' seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). All that survives is the abraded die element which is enclosed within a hoop of copper alloy. The die is formed of a ceramic paste which has decayed in the soil. The reverse of the die is filled with a ceramic adhesive or fine grained cement. The die is abraded and so some detail is lost; the best suggestion of the device is a plumed shield on which is emblazoned a rampant lion. It is possible that the plumed feathers device could alternatively be interpreted as a debased crown. The design is …

A complete cast copper alloy thimble of later Medieval to Post-Medieval date (about 1400-1650). The thimble has a shallow domed top and angled sides. The exterior is decorated with a continuous spiral of D shaped pits or depressions covering the sides and top; there is no tonsure. There is a plain undecorated border approximately 4.3 - 5.6mm wide around the base. The bottom end of the spiral is corroded so it is not clear if there was a maker's mark here. Object type: PUNCH
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy punch or die dating from the Post-medieval period, most likely to the Georgian period (AD 1714-1837). The punch has a lozenge-shaped stem, divided in the middle by a sub-circular collar, from which the upper part of the stem was presumably a tang fitting into a wooden or bone handle. The punch head itself is semicircular in plan with partially crenelated edges; the design on the punch consists of a bird with a large, slightly curved beak (like a flamingo's), sitting within tree branches that are depicted by scrolled tendrils. The bird is looking back over its shoulder. …

Copper alloy plaque. Cast concavo-convex shield-shaped plate bearing numerous punched holes of diameter circa 1mm on its convex face. The finder kindly notes these spell out HOME / SWEET / HOME over three lines. This phrase was first popularised as the title of a sentimental ballad written by John Howard Payne in 1823; then as a soldiers' song in the American Civil War; and as a text for children's needlework samplers - most of the letters may be rendered in straight lines. It was perhaps the latter source this object draws upon. The concave face may suggest attachment to a mug or bot…
