Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A damaged copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date. It splits at one end to for a slot for the strap, but most of both plates are missing. The closed end is also missing and the sides are damaged. This makes it hard to determine the original shape and therefore the class. The front is decorated with niello in the grooves of an incised design. A pentagon shaped panel at the open end extends by curving lines down the centre of the body of the strap end. The design is unclear.

Copper alloy parasol fitting, from the end of a rib. Cast conical cylinder with an apical loop formed by crimping of its narrower end. This terminal bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, and its stepped sides suggest it was intended to limit movement to a single plane. At its wider end, the cylinder bears scars indicating the position of a transverse rivet with a head diameter of 2.3mm - its further extent is lost, though its other end is visible, showing it went through the object off-centre.
A similar, larger, object retaining degraded wood (NLM-662EE3) was reported along wit…

Copper alloy and wood parasol fitting, from the end of one of the ribs. A cast cylindrical sheath retaining degraded wood within. A transverse rivet of diameter 1.6mm (only its ends remain) passed through the sides of the cylinder to secure a wooden rod or dowel; this feature was kindly noted by Brian Kearsley. The end of the cylinder bears a robust integrally cast lug with a drilled hole for suspension of diameter 2.5mm; the stepped sides of the lug appear intended to limit movement to a single plane and its sides and top are filed, perhaps to assist this movement. A similar, smaller…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Sheet copper alloy bell of medieval date, probably from horse harness. Conical bell with an elongated oval suspension loop with (now broken) aperture of length 2.5mm. The body of the bell was formed of beaten sheet metal of a thickness varying from 0.4mm to 1.3mm, rolled to form a cone with a butted seam up the reverse. The loop is pierced from side to side, and projects slightly to the front. Now squashed and distorted, there is no sign of a clapper, and there may not have been one; it is most likely that this bell originally had four lobes at the base that were bent in together to r…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy pin of Medieval date with a wire wound head. The circular shaft tapers to a point and is complete. The head is made from a separate piece of wire coiled round the top of the shaft. the spiral starts at the bottom and travels up to the right. The head formed is spherical. Similar pins are described in Egan and Pritchard and a late Medieval date of 1300 - 1500 AD is suggested. Most of the patina has been lost, but otherwise the pin is in good condition.
