A copper-alloy mount of post-Medieval date.
The thin, slightly convex plate forming the head of the mount takes the form of an acorn. The rounded cupule has moulded segments and a curved ridge marks its rim. The tapering nut has a pointed projection at the end. A right-angled 'stalk' projects from the base of the cupule. On the concave underside of the mount there are two circular-sectioned rivets, both of which appear to have been added after the original casting. These rivets have been deliberately bent inwards to secure the mount to the now-missing strap. The object measures 31.9…

Copper alloy mount, as identified by finder. Cast sub-triangular plate with scalloped edges, possibly from a position mounted at the corner of a rectangular object - possibly a book cover. A pair of pelta-shaped cut-outs, whose edges are lightly bevelled on the back of the object, flank an attachment hole of diameter 2mm. Haphazardly positioned punch-marks of diameter 2.8mm run along the edges, with a further seven larger punch-marks of diameter 4.5mm possibly arranged around one of the smaller marks on the field between the cut outs. Two deeper pairs of straight punch marks occur clo…

A complete copper alloy mount in the form of a fleur de lis dating from the Medieval to the Post Medieval period (1400-1700). The mount has a central convex plume flanked by two smaller convex plumes either side. The smaller plumes are decorated with concave circles in the centre of each and there is a raised line down the centre of the object. At either side of the parallel strips are rivets that would have held the object in place. The back of the object is concave and unde…

A cast, copper-alloy mount of probable early Post-Medieval date. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan, widening on both sides towards one end to create two, opposing "wings". The wings are each incised with a curved, zig-zag decoration, possibly representing feathers. Above the wings, the mount narrows to a rectangular, terminal knop. The mount may have represented a bird or, possibly, an angel.
There is a drilled, circular rivet hole in the centre of the mount, between the two wings. The rivet hole is filled with iron corrosion which extends onto the front face of the mount, aroun…

An incomplete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy mount (c. 1600-c. 1700 AD).
The mount is moulded at the front and largely concave at the rear and is in the form of an escallop shell. At the front the ridges of the shell are defined by eight or nine radiating grooves. A small projection at the base of the shell has a horizontal terminal (width of 14.59mm) which probably has a small break at the end. On the rear face, at the junction of the shell and the small projection, there is a stub of an integral spike, circular in cross-section. There was probably another spike at the opposite en…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount in the form of a sitting bird. The bird is three-dimesional and has a solid oval head with a long beak. The body is convex, pointed oval in plan and has two incomplete stubs of metal projecting from the rim on the underside. These two tabs would have joined to form a circular loop.
The object has a mid-green patina with small areas of pitting on the surface.
The bird depicted resembles a duck and other similar examples appear to support this interpretation. Similar mounts from Lincolnshire are known from Claxby by Alford (Ambrose 1978: 83), North W…

Silver mount. Cast plate in the form of a cross potent, now roughly folded and flattened. The motif might be apt to the decoration of the cover of a missal, breviary or reliquary. A symbol resembling two conjoined lozenges is stamped into the bar at the end of one of the arms. When combined with smaller similar crosses in its angles, this symbol would become the Cross of Jerusalem, the badge of that Crusader kingdom - the military Orders held extensive lands in eastern England, though their local importance was primarily economic. This object is to be considered as Treasure on account…

A incomplete copper alloy object, probably a mount, of Medieval to Post Medieval date, c. 1200-1800 AD. The object has been fashioned from a rectangular copper alloy sheet, pressed with a repeating decoration and silvered or tinned on the decorated surface. The sheet has been pierced on one of the shorter ends with three very small circular holes, with one still potentially holding a fragment of a rivet intact; the other short end has been broken. The decoration consists of a raised series of overlapping sub-rectangular shapes with one trilobed end. A vertical line runs down the centr…

A medieval copper alloy mount. The object consists of a flat oval plate with central circular attachment hole and a flat hook, with traces of gilding remaining on the surface. The mount is somewhat similar to hooked tags of Read's class A type 2 (Brian Read 2008: Hooked-clasps and Eyes, p.14), which date to the Early Medieval period. However, the presence of gilding and also the shape of the hook suggest a later date.
