Copper alloy buckle fragment. The arm from a locking buckle, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, correcting an initial identification as a purse bar fragment.
Cast tapered stem of lentoid section with a terminal knop decorated with diagonally circumferential grooves. At the other end, and at its widest point, the oval section stem gives way to a narrower round-section rod of diameter 3mm which projects a further 17mm. The end of this rod is lightly burred, suggesting this to be its full extent. Now bent - though a marked curvature may have been integral to the function proposed. …

Complete cast copper alloy asymmetrical double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1575-1700). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular (rectangular with two angled corners and two curved ) in plan. The frame is D shaped in cross section with bevelled edges on the upper edge. A central bar divides the frame irregularly. The pin (not present) would have fitted to this central bar. The frame has two notches at the mid point that may possibly have acted as pin rests; however these are on the external edge of the frame farther than the internal which is more common. In line with the na…

An incomplete medieval to post medieval copper alloy douple-looped buckle, missing its pin. The buckle is crudely cast; it has bevelled outer edges on the upper and lower surfaces but the thickness of the frame is uneven and it has in places twisted. It measures 27.4mm (length) x 27.1mm (width) x 3.5mm (thickness) and weighs 3.34g.
Whitehead (1996, 52-53) dates undecorated double-lopped buckle to c. 1350-1650 AD.

Copper alloy buckle. Cast single looped buckle with widened edge, notched lip and narrowed strap bar with a separate plate of folded sheet metal of thickness 0.8mm attached to it. The plate was secured by three rivets which passed from the display face through the strap, meeting rectangular roves - also of 0.8mm thickness - behind it; two remain and a third is lost. The flat rivet heads which remain are circa 2.5mm in diameter but the empty rivet hole is circa 1.7mm in diameter, suggesting that the heads of the rivets have been burred to secure them. This method of fastening is more u…

A copper-alloy single-loop buckle with integral plate, dating from the Medieval period.
The frame is 'D-shaped, has gently sloping surfaces and gradually increases in width, reaching a maximum at the centre of the outer side. The now-missing pin would have been attached at the damaged circular aperture which punctuates the double moulded band separating the frame and plate. The back of the frame tapers smoothly into the now-bent frame, whose straight sides converge towards a lis-shaped terminal. A transverse moulding divides the upper surface of the plate into two portions. There ar…

Silver-gilt buckle with a triangular plate, recently broken in two pieces. The oval loop, of D shaped section, is cast in one with the plate. It has a false shield-on-tongue composed of two stepped, crescentic panels, each decorated with a band of interlace now obscured by corrosion. The base of the tongue is an elongated oval, the tip is now missing. At the junction of the loop and plate, on each side of the narrow flange bordering the latter, is a garnet-inlaid collared boss with a beaded rim. One of the garnets is a cabochon, the other is flat-cut and was presumably a replacement i…

The object has a medium green patina. Dark corrosion has formed along one end of the pin bar, suggesting it …
