The punch has a lozenge-shaped stem, divided in the middle by a sub-circular collar, from which the upper part of the stem was presumably a tang fitting into a wooden or bone handle. Object type: SPUR
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy prick from a spur (probably), dating from the Medieval to early Post-medieval period. The prick is long and sharp with four facets; there is a collar at the blunt end which would have been attached to the heelplate of the spur. Prick spurs pre-date rowel spurs, and this example is probably 14th - 16th century in date. One would not have liked to have been the horse should this interpretation be correct!
