An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman trumpet derivative brooch. Only part of the trumpet head survives, the remainder of the brooch now missing due to old breaks. The head is trumpet shaped, undecorated and with the remains of a possible incomplete headloop at the top and incomplete flaring sides. The back face of the head has a rectangular indentation where the spring would have originally rested, with the incomplete remains of circular apertures to hold in place a transverse axis bar visible on incomplete projecting lugs to either side of the indentation. A fragment of cast copper-alloy metal working debris. It is rectangular in form, D-shaped in section and terminates at both ends in old breaks. The surfaces demonstrate signs of post-depositional wear and corrosion, and are crudely/unevenly finished. It measures 24.94mm in length, 8.79mm in width, 5.04mm in thickness and 5.72g in weight. Although this fragment has a relatively uniform shape it does not appear to have been finished as a complete object. It is possible that it is a fragment from a larger object that has been subject to damage and/or re-use, but it seems most likely that…

It may be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards, although the findspot might indicate a possible Roman to Early-Medieval date range.
