A fragment of bone of unknown date. It is part of a long bone, judging from the size, from a cow or horse. With only part of the shaft remaining, it is not possible to be certain of the species. The thickness perhaps indicates a tibia. The bone is not fresh, so is likely to be archaeological, but cannot be dated without using scientific techniques. Since it was found on Marston Moor Battlefield, a date of 1644 is perhaps most likely.

Object type: DIE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A crudely cast, lead alloy die. The numbers are indicated by circular pits. The sum of the dots on opposing sides is not seven, as in regular dice, but 4, 7 and 10 respectively (1 & 3, 2 & 5, and 4 & 6), suggesting that it may possibly be of Roman date, 43-410AD. Egan in Finds Research Group Datasheet 23 suggests that medieval and later dice are usually of the regular layout. Alternatively, it could be a home made irregular die of later date. The exterior is decorated with a continuous spiral of D shaped pits or depressions covering the sides and top; there is no tonsure. There is a plain undecorated border approximately 4.3 - 5.6mm wide around the base. The bottom end of the spiral is corroded so it is not clear if there was a maker's mark here. The thimble has a dark green-brown patina. Examples of the spiral design from this period may be seen at PAS record IDs: DENO-…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy seal matrix of Medieval date (about 1200-1500). The matrix face is circular and the conical handle has six facets. The terminal of the handle is a suspension loop, but this has been broken; only a stub remains were the loop was. There is a thick collar between the loop and the shaft. The edges of the face are worn and broken which unfortunately makes most of the legend illegible. The following letters in the legend can be made out: "WILL DE(O)[-](CIS)[---](DCA)[-]" so it was probably a personal seal of William (Surname missing). The design is of a stylised…
