Object type: INGOT MOULD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Brown ferruginous fine grained Sandstone possible ingot mould. Fragment of rock crudely shaped by the cleavage of flakes from its sides and base, probably adapting a naturally formed shape. The upper surface bears an oval depression of length 54mm, width 24mm and depth 24mm; the base of this hollow is slightly paler and duller than other surfaces. Though this cavity might be fortuitously formed, as by a fossil bivalve shell, its regularity may hints at artificial origin or improvement. Such objects were often improvised: a Viking Age example from Lurk Lane, Beverley was made from a fr…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy coin weight. Milled weight with identical milled border and legend on both sides. The finder suggests this may be a guinea weight. The inscription, over three lines, reads: S / 21 / 5 * 9, probably meaning 21 shillings if this suggestion is sustained.
Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1770.
Diameter: 20.7mm, Thickness: 3.6mm, Weight: 7.90gms, die axis: 6.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast flat topped conical weight with foot ring and a tapered off-centre longitudinal aperture of diameter 3.8mm (base) to 2.3mm (top). Patinated overall. Though this form of weight was long lived, a Roman date might be suggested for this atypically tidy version. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-4100.

Copper alloy possible steelyard weight. Cast weight comprising a flat-bottomed bulbous base with foot ring, a tapered and lightly facetted stem and a robust apical hook. This object would be apt to slide along the beam of a steelyard balance. The mass falls a little under one ounce (28gms), as defined by various systems of mensuration from the Roman through to the Medieval period. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle fragment. The arm from a locking buckle, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, correcting an initial identification as a purse bar fragment.
Cast tapered stem of lentoid section with a terminal knop decorated with diagonally circumferential grooves. At the other end, and at its widest point, the oval section stem gives way to a narrower round-section rod of diameter 3mm which projects a further 17mm. The end of this rod is lightly burred, suggesting this to be its full extent. Now bent - though a marked curvature may have been integral to the function proposed. …

Object type: BUCKET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy bucket mount. Swan Head mount. A curving swan's neck, with bulbous forehead confirming the species represented, springs from a sub-triangular plate whose concavo-convex form suggests the mount was attached to a wood or leather vessel of estimated diameter circa 100mm. The upper part of the plate represents wings to either side of the neck, and, as lobed projections, the feet and ?tail below; incised lines emphasise these separate elements. The bird is portrayed rearing up: in aggression if the piece is ascribed a Celtic context - or lust if the piece alludes to Classical …

Lead seal matrix. Cast vesica or lentoid shaped matrix. The back bears the cast depiction of a three petalled lily on a long stalk, with a trefoil on a stalk protruding between the side and central petal of the lis on either side. The front bears an incised central panel depicting a lis (without supplementary emblems) and an indistinct circumferential legend. The inscription ends, on the left of the impression made by the matrix, [--]ME?V, probably in Lombardic script, and possibly begins with MA[--]. About one quarter of the matrix is lost at a recent break.

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible harness pendant. Cast discoid plate with a suspension loop formed by the curling of a tapered lug. At first glance, the object looks as if made from a small spoon, but there is no sign of the cracking which would probably arise through the flattening of a concave bowl, nor of any rib between the putative stem and bowl. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1250-1450. Cleaned by finder.

Object type: PARASOL
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy parasol fitting, from the end of a rib. Cast conical cylinder with an apical loop formed by crimping of its narrower end. This terminal bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, and its stepped sides suggest it was intended to limit movement to a single plane. At its wider end, the cylinder bears scars indicating the position of a transverse rivet with a head diameter of 2.3mm - its further extent is lost, though its other end is visible, showing it went through the object off-centre.
A similar, larger, object retaining degraded wood (NLM-662EE3) was reported along wit…

Copper alloy and wood parasol fitting, from the end of one of the ribs. A cast cylindrical sheath retaining degraded wood within. A transverse rivet of diameter 1.6mm (only its ends remain) passed through the sides of the cylinder to secure a wooden rod or dowel; this feature was kindly noted by Brian Kearsley. The end of the cylinder bears a robust integrally cast lug with a drilled hole for suspension of diameter 2.5mm; the stepped sides of the lug appear intended to limit movement to a single plane and its sides and top are filed, perhaps to assist this movement. A similar, smaller…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Sheet copper alloy bell of medieval date, probably from horse harness. Conical bell with an elongated oval suspension loop with (now broken) aperture of length 2.5mm. The body of the bell was formed of beaten sheet metal of a thickness varying from 0.4mm to 1.3mm, rolled to form a cone with a butted seam up the reverse. The loop is pierced from side to side, and projects slightly to the front. Now squashed and distorted, there is no sign of a clapper, and there may not have been one; it is most likely that this bell originally had four lobes at the base that were bent in together to r…

Copper alloy jetton. Sterling Jetton fragment, issue of 1280-1330; the finder's suggestion of Edward I (1272-1307) or Edward II (1307-1327) is probably apt. One third is lost.
Obverse description: Motif worn away, possible circumferential legend or nonsense characters in its place.
Reverse description: Short cross recercellee within a granulated inner circle, border of pellets in place of legend (as per Barnard 1917/1981, plate 1 no. 1, page 97)
