Object type: SEAL
Broad period: MODERN
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead bag seal of modern date. The seal is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by a hole running across its diameter. The holes would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag.
Stamped text can be seen on both sides of the seal though it is extremely worn with breaks rendering much of the text illegible. One side reads [----]//[-]HR//VI and the other reads [---]B//[--]//C.T.//1832.
The text is likely to represent the name of the Quality Control Officer and possibly a code for the location at which the Officer worked or the…

A complete lead bag seal of modern date. The seal is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by a hole running across its diameter. The holes would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag.
Stamped text can be seen on both sides of the seal; one bears three lines of text which appears to read A.ERO[-]//XNHb//H7 (the N is in retrograde). This text is likely to represent the name of the Quality Control Officer and possibly a code for the location at which the Officer worked or the registered number of the sealing tongs he used.

Object type: PARASOL
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy parasol fitting, from the end of a rib. Cast conical cylinder with an apical loop formed by crimping of its narrower end. This terminal bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, and its stepped sides suggest it was intended to limit movement to a single plane. At its wider end, the cylinder bears scars indicating the position of a transverse rivet with a head diameter of 2.3mm - its further extent is lost, though its other end is visible, showing it went through the object off-centre.
A similar, larger, object retaining degraded wood (NLM-662EE3) was reported along wit…

Lead bag seal. Cast pair of discs linked by sprue and clamped together to leave a long slot on one edge opposite a bifurcated slot, enabling use with a drawstring. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment from a 'fob' seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). All that survives is the abraded die element which is enclosed within a hoop of copper alloy. The die is formed of a ceramic paste which has decayed in the soil. The reverse of the die is filled with a ceramic adhesive or fine grained cement. The die is abraded and so some detail is lost; the best suggestion of the device is a plumed shield on which is emblazoned a rampant lion. It is possible that the plumed feathers device could alternatively be interpreted as a debased crown. The design is …

Object type: PLAQUE
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy plaque. Cast concavo-convex shield-shaped plate bearing numerous punched holes of diameter circa 1mm on its convex face. The finder kindly notes these spell out HOME / SWEET / HOME over three lines. This phrase was first popularised as the title of a sentimental ballad written by John Howard Payne in 1823; then as a soldiers' song in the American Civil War; and as a text for children's needlework samplers - most of the letters may be rendered in straight lines. It was perhaps the latter source this object draws upon. The concave face may suggest attachment to a mug or bot…

Copper alloy, painted, iron stand. Shoe-shaped plate with a triangular platform and oval-ended handle; three round section pins of diameter 8.3mm and length 30mm (one lost) were set in round holes with edges lightly countersunk on the upper side of the plate. Jennifer Dunne, Collections Assistant (Social History) for NorthLincolnshireMuseum, kindly confirms the opinion of the finder that this is probably an iron stand for the temporary storage of a heated flat iron, and comments it may be for a small iron used for specialised tasks or unusually shaped objects such as hats. Paint survi…

Lead Alloy, with coat of paint or tar, possible vessel fragments. Two fragments of a cast vessel with curved body of thickness 2.6mm and a thickened rim, the latter possibly serving as a lid seat. A thick black paint or tarry coating is splashed on the outside surface of both fragments, and may suggest its use rather than a decorative finish. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900.

Copper alloy possible nozzle fragment. Cast tubular object with a shoulder above which it continued at a diameter of 14mm; this further extent is lost. This might come from a pair of bellows, or from gas supply equipment or domestic water piping. The good condition tends to indicate a recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1875-1950.

Object type: TOY
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead alloy toy. Cast toy bowl with a pedestal foot and everted rim. This object appears apt to use in a dolls' house kitchen. An external mould line is visible; the bowl is now slightly squashed and part of its upper body is lost. The vessel form is distinct from that of Post-Medieval objects reported from London, and is suggested to be of later date. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1950.

Copper alloy, painted, possible plumb bob. Cast point with four radial tapered fins or vanes in opposed pairs, one larger (25.5mm across) and one smaller (15mm across). The object is collared above the vanes with a circular top (of three quarter inch diameter) and traces of a central hole or socket of diameter 5mm, now filled. The surfaces of the fins are stippled with fine punch marks, and patches of lime green paint occur over all but the upper surface. The object appears apt for use with a theodolite, whereby the point would be suspended over a reference point. Suggested date: Mode…

Copper alloy shell fragment. Two cast fragments of estimated diameter 90mm, from a conical casing. The fragments bear at least 12 bands of fine screw thread within. On the outer face a numbered sequence between 8 and 17 on one fragment and 1 and 8 on the other accompanies a subdivided scale of units of circa 1.5mm. The finder notes that the gradations were intended to set the fuse of heavy anti-aircraft shells to the altitude at which they should explode. Suggested date: Modern, 1916-1945.

Object type: TOY
Broad period: MODERN
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy water pistol toy of later 19th or early 20th century date.
The object takes the form of a revolver or 'six-shooter' handgun, missing the sqeezable balloon handle. The attachment for the handle is a projecting disc that would have fitted into a socket. The gun is not an exact replica in miniature, however, as there is no trigger or trigger guard, hammer or sight at the end of the barrel. The end of the barrel of worn and slightly rounded and appears solid.
Flashmarks are visible along the upper and lower faces around the perimeter of the object.

The tamper is very worn rendering facial features indistinguishable though a faint outline of hair can be seen. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Wrexham
Workflow stage: Published
A silver finger ring in the form of a strap or miniature belt. It has fractured across the band at one point, no gilding is evident. The hoop, which has a fracture across it, has a band width of 6.3mm, an internal diameter of 22.2 x 19mm and weight of 5.844g.
The finger ring has a form typical of a nineteenth century date. The popular form was made by a range of manufacturers, including Spiers (Hart 1978, 133). Details of the strap slide vary, and some have buckle loops. This ring is of nineteenth-century date and therefore as it is not at least 300 years old is not treasure under …
